Failure to Validate Office Home and Student 2007 [0x80180104] RRS feed

  • Question

  • I received an unopened copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 as a graduation gift for a family friend who works for Microsoft. After two months of using it, I looked online to download some templates for Excel and was told that my "Office Key" was not valid and that I may be a victim of piracy. I'm not sure what to do, but I know this software isn't illegal; I'm looking at the box and serial number right now.

Is there any way to prove that my copy of Office is legit and validate it again?

    John Swanson,

Recently we have seen several posts from people who have become victims. First, I want you to run a diagnostic test in order for us to analyze the results. If you are a victim, I will provide information for you to file a piracy report. Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report a piracy case who have become a victim to assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.

I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    1.      Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.

    2.      Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.

If you could also please follow the steps outlined below, the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.

    http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en

Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.

    1.      After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.

    2.      Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

Step 2 is to look on the computer itself, in the documentation you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

    Thank you,

  • John,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation. Unfortunately, the product key used to install the operating system  Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  The product key used for installing Office is a geo blocked key which is why you are receiving the 104 PID error.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer.  You will need to uninstall Office before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are available options you may choose for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Please review the following link for more information:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs. We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. We have a 3rd party registered Cryptography lab who evaluates EVERY (really!) submission for the High-Quality Counterfeit replacement program - as they have a pre-determined subset of items they look for.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Thank you

  • John,

There seems to be two Office Suite versions installed on your system. Microsoft Office Standard 2007 indicates Genuine while Home and Student 2007 indicates a PID Error 104. Question is the latter version a trial version which you installed or came with the system upon purchase.

Also as I previously indicated the operating system product key comes up as blocked by microsoft. You indicate the COMPANY STORE can you provide the employee number which is on the outside of the packaging?

Also I would contact Toshiba's technical service @ (800) 457-7777. Explain your situation and request the recovery software media. Recovery Software CD’s are specific to your computer manufacturer. Please contact your manufacturer for assistance. They should be able to assist with your request and/or questions. Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.

I have included their contact information here for your convenience:

John we hope this information will provide the assistance you need to rectify your situation.  Please post back in this thread. should you need further assistance.

Going to the retailer doesn't seem to be an option for me. I received Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 as a graduation gift from a woman who got it from the Microsoft Company Store. I doubt Microsoft would be selling counterfeit to its own employees.

Your reply has made me even more confused. First off, you talk about my "operating system". Do you mean my copy of Windows Vista that came pre-loaded on my laptop, or my copy of Microsoft Office? Or do you mean that both my operating system AND my copy of Office are now failing validation? Thus far I have had no issues with Vista.

I also fail to see why I need to backup my hard drive since this is an issue with Microsoft Office. Unless Office is booby-trapped to wipe the hard drive of those loyal customers who find themselves in my position of being "un-validated", I see no reason as to why I would need to do a clean install of my operating system.

I'm really not sure what to do. I know for a fact that this software is 100% legal and would bet my life on it. Might there be someone I could e-mail about this problem? These forums don't seem to be working.
