  • Yep.  It's a rating system.  If you click the arrow on someone's thread, it'll move their thread to the top of the list.

Oh, and the 0 on your post is now a 1.  You have 4 extra points.  :)

There should be a small triangular arrow directly above the number, pointing upwards.

  • Probably cache issue. An option would be to clear your browser cache or try using a different browser. I'm seeing the arrows consistently in IE 7, IE 8 and FF 3.x

We've refreshed our cache servers last night and haven't seen any outages this morning.

  • Note: A little background information on this change. Historically speaking the helpful voting is something that is not used very much. It could be something very useful if a. people used it more b. the user inteface had a better way of giving people tools to make use of it. This release focuses on "a" by trying to make the user interface a lot easier to see and hopefully straight forward (an up with a number). In future releases we will both monitor its use and work on "b." letting users searching for items the community thinks is helpful have more visibility and make these things easier to discover.

  • Not seeing any arrow ... but if I move the mouse cursor to the area above the 0, I get a tooltip "Vote as Helpful". So it *thinks* it is there.

Don't know why the icon does not appear. I am using IE 7.

  • Being picky - it's not an arrow, it's an arrowhead.

I actually thought it looked more like a dunce's cap, which I thought was quite appropriate.

  • LOL. If anyone wants to try out the dunce cap, I am only 65 points away from my fifth badge. :-)

  • Well I'd be happy to but that would move your post to near the top of the list and its confusing enough as it is.

  • Well, if the forum is going to mess with the display order ... the forum should at least provide a sort option to *not* do it.

People often refer to post info and it is *really* confusing to read them out of order!

This feature seems to assume that there will be a single question, a set of answers, and one answer is the best one and should be moved to the top. But there is often quite a bit of discussion that goes on and moving the answers around will make it *really* hard to follow.

But I think someone has already posted "bugs" against this?

  • Thanks for the feedback on the arrow. We are looking into the bug where the image isn't showing up...  We are also going to entertain some ideas on making the voting ux more discoverable and obvious. The above info helps and gives us some ideas on what we can change to make it easier for people. As far as the ordering issue, that is being is being discussed in another thread here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/reportabug/thread/a3dd70c0-f8f9-465e-bab6-71071998fe48 feel free to add to it.

I'm very glad you have noticed that thread. I was worried that because it all started as an aside to another issue it would have been missed by the very people who could do something about it. (and hopefully very quickly)

Btw Deborah's "Well, if the forum is going to mess with the display order ... the forum should at least provide a sort option to *not* do it." isn't enough. Just having an option not to do it still means that you will need to quote every time you post because you could never be sure if the reader of the thread had the option on or off.

(Not talking about getting rid of having Answers at the top of the thread for which there already IS an option - not that it is working at the moment)
