I cant load certain software because administrator password is unknown RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was given a used pc with XP OS loaded.  I want to use it for my home network .
I want to use it as a browsing tool only.  I dont need to store alot of data or files on it, basically i need a dumb terminal.
    I have a Dell 400SC with XP ProSP3 disks ( driver disk & XP disk ).
I also have my original WIN95 & WIN Me CD's.

All in all, I want to be able to download anything I want without a message appearing with " you dont have permission etc..."   to do whatever it is i am doing.

Can I somehow remove the old administrator and password?? or do i need to reformat the HDD??

  • Hello Quasi,

Look on the computer or in the materials that came with your computer to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA).  If you have one, tell us about the CoA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or another version or edition of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key printed on the CoA.

    5.  Windows XP purchased in retail packaging will have the CoA on the retail package box top, and will have the Product Key on a yellow-orange label affixed to the CD holder folder inside the box.

  • Hi Quasi,

Your issue doesn't appear to be XP Activation or Validation related. I recommend posting your question in one of the XP Newgroups at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx

    Thank you,
