Malware application freezes computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I stumbled upon an application on the internet. It froze my computer. The name of the program was "Microsoft program". I received an email from "updates@microsoft.com" telling me download and install it to update the computer security.

It had a phone number on it to call for assistance regarding the same.

I was unable to use any key on the keyboard or task manager or anything. System restart or safe mode did not help. I was only able to see a Windows with a number. It had a Microsoft logo on it and a blank box requiring an activation code.

It had a phone number on it to call for assistance regarding the same.

I called on the number provided on the screen, they gave me an activation key. I entered the key and the window went away. They charged me 200 $ for the same.

Please provide me an explanation for the program and the charge.

  • Did you attempt to call the original telephone number and ask them?  Unfortunately, no one in this peer-to-peer forum can help you with your inquiry.
