LCDS's localization RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I would like to translate LCDS to my language (Croatian, country code HR). Can you provide some steps?
I have found localization files (Is it possible to rename it and just start the translation within the filel?)

    Thank you in advance.

  • I got these instructions from the LCDS team and the permission to share it.  This document is very rough.  No one outside of the team has used this before but hopefully it is understandable enough that you will be able to see where you need to update.

    Hope this helps!

Localization Instructions for LCDS created Course Content

    File Structure

Each course root directory contains all course specific XML content.

The course root directory holds three different types of content:

    A.      Platform files and folders.

    B.      The "imsmanifest.xml" file.

    C.      The course content XML files (all other files present within the course root directory).

    A. Platform files and folders

The following files and directories are platform related (to either SCORM or the online viewer) and must not be localized or otherwise modified:

                    adlcp_rootv1p2.xsd

                    imscp_rootv1p1p2.xsd

                    imsmd_rootv1p2p1.xsd

                    ftindexes.xml

                    default.html

"platform" directory (do not modify any files within this directory)

"media" directory (do not modify any files within this directory)

"ftindex" directory (do not modify any files within this directory - this directory may or may not be present)

    B. The "imsmanifest.xml" file

The "imsmanifest.xml" file must be localized in the following manner:

                    1. The text nodes within every <title> element must be localized.

                    2. The text node within the <imsmd:langstring> element must be localized.

                    3. The xml:lang attribute within the <imsmd:langstring> element must be updated to reflect the localization language and locale:  <imsmd:langstring xml:lang="pt-BR">

    C. The course content XML files (all other files present within the course root directory)

The course content XML files must be localized in the following manner:

    1. The only attribute values that should be localized are:

                                    a. The "title" attribute within <topic> elements (corresponding to the XPath pattern "//topic/@title").

                                    b. The "lessonTitle" attribute within <lessonManifest> elements (corresponding ot the XPath pattern "//lessonManifest/@lessonTitle").

                                    c. The “term” attribute within <definition> element.

    2. All text nodes within course content XML files should be localized.  Text nodes may appear within any of the following elements:

                                    <p>

                                    <strong>

Instructions to preview a localized course within the LCDS

Once you have localized course content files, use the following steps to move the localized content files into an LCDS course and preview it to check for errors.

    1.       Open the LCDS eLearning authoring application.

    2.       Click the “new” button.  A dialog will appear.  Within this dialog set the name of the course to the specified course name and from the “Course Language” drop-down, choose the language that the content has been localized to.

    3.       Upon creation of this new course, click the “Media Folder” button within the LCDS and a windows explorer window will open to this new course’s “media” folder.

    4.       Close the LCDS application.

    5.       Open a windows explorer window and navigate to all the localized course files.  These files will include many xml files (including the “imsmanifest.xml” file) and a “media” folder.  Copy all of these files and the “media” folder.

    6.       Switch to the windows explorer window that you previously opened with the LCDS.  Within this windows explorer, move up one directory (from the course’s “media” folder to the “course” folder).  You will now see a small set of xml files and a “media” folder.  Paste the files that you have copied in step 5 into this directory.  If you are asked if you want to overwrite existing files, agree that you wish to overwrite all existing files.

    7.       Open the LCDS.

    8.       Click the “open” button, navigate to the course you just created, and double click this course entry to open the course.

    9.       Click the preview button (the small magnifying glass) within the LCDS interface.

    10.   Examine your course.
