Where to start? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I used to be a classic ASP developer almost 7 years back. Then I jumped the boat to do project management. After so many years, I feel that I need to move to programming world. I am interested in moving to C#/ASP.net/Azure/Share Point. Where do you think I should start with my certifications? I am getting confused by looking at MS learning site.

  • Good old Classic ASP! That was a fun time to be an internet dev! :)

Anyways, right back to today, if you havent programmed since back in the day, I would suggest that you might be better off looking at the MSDN RampUp program which has an ASP to ASP.NET crash course and best of all its free! http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/rampup/default.aspx & http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/rampup/dd861547.aspx

Otherwise I would suggest looking at doing the ASP.NET 3.5 certification. The general understanding of web stuff should be ok, it will be the new stuff you will need to bone up on, which is pretty much everything if you havent done any coding since classic ASP.

Since the jump will be pretty long, I would suggest starting with the ASP.NET exam 70-562 as this will probably have the most stuff you are familar with.

First off the MCTS ASP.NET is a 2 exam cert. You need to pass exams 70-536 and 70-562. But this can be done in any order as its the combination of the exams that count.

On my blog I have an objectives list with links to the relevant MSDN articles to help people get through it.

This will give you some information on getting skilled up and once you have got back on the saddle of programming you can probably come back and look for more advice.
