Please help with Vista Key Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am receiving an error telling me that my copy of vista is non-genuine; however, I am using the Key from the back of my laptop.  My laptop was infected with a virus, I was able to get rid of the virus, but when I did a system restore was when I began getting the non-genuine errors.  I have tried to validate using the automated phone system, but it did not work.  Any help with what the issue may be and how to solve it would be appreciated.  Thank you

  • All I can think to do is to attempt telephone activation and speak to an operator to see if they can help.

    telephone activation (operator calls)

    Click on the Start button

    in the Search box, type

    SLUI   4

    and hit the Enter key

follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

  • please try the following.....

Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.

    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type: net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Restart your computer twice.

You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

  • I followed the directions above, including restarting twice, and trying to activate over the phone.  Unfortunately, it did not work.  I have the original Windows disk provided by MSFT, but I trying to avoid a full re-install.

  • Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some them."

  • You only copied a shortcut to the file - not the file itself :)

    please try again.

That's no as bad as it may look - the remaining errors are 'normal' for Vista, as they are user-modifiable files, and should never have been included in the scan in the first place :)

That said, there's obviously some corruption present somewhere, as the CBS.log file should have archived itself at some point in the past 4 months, rather than building to a 45MB file.

Let's see if another tool can find the problem....

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Windows Vista 32-bit (x86), downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • CheckSUR found only one error - which I can't really see causing this problem, but it could be blocking updates....

  • I've uploaded a file - bcsaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of  which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\bcsaa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

    DIR D:\bcsaa

    or

    DIR E:\bcsaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\bcsaa  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • We've fixed the CheckSUR error, at least :)

As expected, the CBS logs indicate that the other 'problems' remain.

Please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - what happens?

  • Progress is progress, right? :-)

    Activate Windows.
Windows must be activated before validation can determine if this copy of Windows is genuine.
Windows is now in reduced functionality mode.

This was at the top of the MFST page after running the program at that link.  The page also read "The version of Windows you are running is no longer available for purchase."

I tried to activate again over the automated phone service, but that didn't work either.

I appreciate your help.  I'm learning a lot going through the process.

  • All I can think to do is to attempt telephone activation and speak to an operator to see if they can help.

    telephone activation (operator calls)

    Click on the Start button

    in the Search box, type

    SLUI   4

    and hit the Enter key

follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

  • okay, I'll give that a go. At this point I have the virus taken care of, so I may just move everything I want to a external hard drive, and upgrade laptops/windows.  That being said, I'll call the number and talk to a service rep.  Originally, they weren't able to help me, but I think there is another number for more difficult cases.  Thanks again for you help.
