Will MCSA 2008 to 2012 upgrades be eligable for MCSE SharePoint 2013 certification? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

I'm currently almost finished with my MCSA/MCITP 2008 certification track by taking the following exams:
    70-640, 70-642, 70-646

My plan is to after this upgrade to MCSA 2012 by passing the 70-417 exam which would give me MCSA in both Server 2008 and 2012.
I have already passed the 70-247 exam and will take the 70-246 exam to get my MCSE Private Cloud certification. Here (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/private-cloud-certification.aspx) it specifically states that the MCSA 2008 is eligible instead of 2012.

However. After this my plan is to get the MCSE for SharePoint 2013. And on it's site (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/mcse-sharepoint-certification.aspx) it specifically says that the 410, 411 and 412 exams are required. However I will not pass these exams since I will do the MCSA 2008 equivalent and then get the upgrade.

Does anyone have more information on this? Would I have to take the 410, 411 and 412 exams as well even though I passed the 2008 equivalent and got the upgraded certification of what these 3 combined tests should give?

  • No.  As you upgrade to MCSA 2008 using 70-417, you do not need to do exams 410, 411 and 412

  • Thanks for your reply

Do you know where I can get an official information source about this? Is there somewhere to get an official answer from Microsoft or maybe Prometric?

From where did you get this answer yourself? Looks like on your twitter account that you are a MCT?

  • Hi,

    To clarify things a little.

You would need MCSA Windows Server 2012 in order to get MCSE Sharepoint

(Reference: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/mcse-sharepoint-certification.aspx) - It clearly states that you will need to take 70-410, 70-411, 70-412 in order to achieve MCSA Windows Server 2012.

    ----

However, since you already gotten your MCITP Windows Server 2008. You are automatically eligible for transition to MCSA Windows Server 2008. Thus, you will need to do 70-417 (Upgrading Your Skills to MCSA Windows Server 2012) to upgrade your MCSA Windows Server 2008 to MCSA Windows Server 2012 to meet the requirements for MCSE SharePoint.

    ----

One good source would be as followed. (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/mcsa-windows-server-certification.aspx)

  • Thanks for your post, though it's still not what I'm looking for. The MCSA SharePoint 2013 page does not specify MCSA 2012 as a prerequisite but rather the current courses to get it and it say's nothing about the upgrade (exam 417)

The specification for the MCSE SharePoint 2013 page specifically specifies exam 410, 411, 412 and later 331 and 332. (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/mcse-sharepoint-certification.aspx)

    However I will take exams:
    640, 642, 646 (MCITP/MCSA 2008) and then
    417 (MCSA 2012) and then
    331 and 332 (MCSE SharePoint 2013)

Therefore I will not take the exact exams that are mentioned on the page. Even though they should be equivalent. Will it still give me the MCSE: SharePoint title?

  • Well, the new level of MCSE certification would require you to have MCSA Windows Server 2012 (Which was made up with 410, 411, 412).

So instead of doing 410, 411 and 412 to achieve the title of MCSA Windows Server 2012, you are going for the simple route by upgrading your current MCSA Windows Server 2008 to MCSA Windows Server 2012 by taking 70-417 ONLY.

Therefore, you still meet the requirements to get MCSE SharePoint once you complete 331 and 332.

What was shown on the certification page for MCSE SharePoint is assuming for people without the MCSA Windows Server related certification. Therefore in order to meet the MCSE SharePoint, they will need to get MCSA Windows Server 2012 by doing the 3 papers.

    Cheers.

  • I just wish it was written somewhere that upgrading through exam 417 was also OK. :-/

  • Hi,

You need not worry, just focus on your preparation of your papers. I did the upgrade by taking 70-417 and taken my Private Cloud exam. That's why I am MCSE Private Cloud now. :)

    Cheers.
