I'm running XP Pro SP3 on a Lenovo 3000 laptop with two 1TB external HDs, one eSATA, the other USB. I drive is data, the other backup. When I try to echo a large (260GB, 200+K files) folder to backup, Synctoy hangs, always at around the 240-250Gb mark. Changing file order makes no difference, it always chokes on around the same volume of data. The system has no problem copying folders of this size, the problem seems to be with Synctoy.
Both external drives are only about half-full and my C: drive has about 20GB of elbow-room.
The data is cross-referenced so I would prefer not to split the folders. Is there another solution?
There is no hard limit that we have wired in regarding limits on the amount of data that we can sync. I am not sure that we have seen anyone else sync that amount of data so it is hard to know what is going on. Can you take a log and let me know what it says?
I am having a similar problem maybe. I have 108GB of photos (54,083 files on 965 Folders) I keep on a 1TB external Western Digital My Book hard drive connected through usb. This is not the only thing on this hard drive. Anyway, I'm trying to echo sync from the parent photo folder to a second hard drive, this one is a 500GB external Western Digital My Book hard drive. Like Clyvis, above, it will seem to be working fine for an hour or more (?? I walk away), then it starts going very, very slowly until it seems to actually stop, even though it looks like it's trying to copy over. I've tried both syncing from scratch (nothing on the targeted hard drive) and I've tried copying everything over to the targeted hard drive, then echo syncing (thinking it will see they are unchanged, but it still seems to take forever and get stuck). Any ideas? I used to use the backup software from wester digital, but I liked better having full, uncompressed files on the second hard drive, so I wanted to try sync toy. I use sync toy a lot for other things, but not so large of a one time sync (in size or number of files), so thought maybe this was the problem. Thanks for your help.
I don't want to take the focus off size and volume questions, but is it possible the slowdown's a function of the general slowdown/duplication issue I've been trying to discuss causes for on the thread below? ("SyncToy 2.0 (not beta) is painfully slow")
