Back up to Dual layer DVD burner RRS feed

  • Question

  • It appears that OneCare is not compatible with Dual Layer DVD burners. I have tried a new Verbatim DVD-R DL disc but it is rejected once the Back-up is activated.

I have Nero Smart Essentials software installed but not running during the OneCare back-up

I also have 2 DVD burners installed on my PC, OneCare back-up menu does not give me an option which burner to use.

Any suggestion on how to solve these 2 problems

  • I don't think DVD-R DL is a supported media. DVD+R DL is supported and should work.

  • Does OneCare backup to single layer discs on that machine? I can't speak to the disc format issue, and I have no experience with multiple burners in a system for possible backup destination. I recommend that you contact support.

  • Can you tell me, what is the difference between DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL.  Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question

  • Yes it does back up to a single layer disc

  • DVD+R and DVD-R are different formats. A good explanation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD%2BR

  • That web site was a good explanation of the DVD-R and DVD+R formats

However my DVD burner will recognise both formats, - & + , we have tried to write to the DVD-R dl disc, using Nero Express and were able to successfully write to that disc.

Therefore our asumption that OneCare is not copmpatible with DVD-R DL discs

We have not tried the DVD+R DL discs

  • I think that Jim is assuming the same regarding the -R DL disc format.

  • Copied from KB 943913 :

Back up to a disc burner
To use a disc burner as a backup device, you must have a disc burner and blank-writable discs. Windows Live OneCare supports the following writable disc types:•CD-R
    •DVD+R DL (Double Layer)
Note OneCare cannot use a CD or a DVD that has been formatted or erased by using a third-party program, such as Nero or Roxio. OneCare can only use clean or new CDs and DVDs that were not formatted by a third-party program.

Since DVD-R DL is not listed I assume it is not supported.

  • I guess there is only one way to resolve this

I will get a +R DL disc and try it

Will let you know the outcome

  • SUCCESS  Used a DVD+R DL disc, 8.5GB,  back up worked without any problems

Just goes to show, always follow the instructions to the letter (+), no pun intended

Thank you for all your assistance

BTW, Discs are TDK 2.4X speed
