Hello Ian,
Please download the MGA Diagnostic Tool then run the tool. Next we will need for you to please copy and past the results of the test back in this thread. In turn this will allow our team to analyze the experience which you are receiving. We will be able to provide you with a resolution.
Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.
Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.
Thank you,
Stephen Holm, MS

Ian,
Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide the following steps: Open My Computer located on your desktop
1. Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
NOTE: The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow: Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.
2. Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete”.
3. This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA)
4. Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.
5. If product activation was successful try the Office validation again by at : http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng
The following Knowledge Base Articles can provide more information for Office Activation issues:
“How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate an Office product” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us

“How to activate a license in Office programs” http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/828958/en-us
Let me know if this works :-)
