You'll need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP and then perform a "clean install".

Quoted from the support doc (linked by Carey) Issues with Downgrading HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario PCs to Windows XP
Issues you will experience if you downgrade from Vista to XPIf you have an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario consumer notebook PC that shipped with Windows Vista, you should not attempt to downgrade to Windows XP. Changing the operating system (OS) will cause severe operational problems. Many of the components, such as sound, video, graphics, network connectivity, drives, or other devices and peripherals, may have limited functionality, or may not work at all. Please do not get upset with microsoft when XP does not work on your computer.
