WHS console will not run

Question
-
My WHS box will not run a console either remotley or physicially.
Sitting at the WHS box
when I try to start the console cpu goes to 99% running DW20.exe then a short while later it closes leaving cpu free but still no console. the same thing happens when i try it remotley from any other box in the house.
I know dw20.exe is an error reporting tool but logs show nothing..
What can i do to fix the problem? what is the problem?Wednesday, October 7, 2009 9:42 AM

Hi Dave,
That doesn't look good :-/
Some add-in probably deleted those files upon uninstall... If I remember there was a problem like this with the Task Viewer add-in in the past.
You can recover those files from an existing WHS install which has the same path level (very important!) or by doing a server re-install.
It could be that some other files will also be missing too, so when you find the one you are looking for you'll have to retry and see what the next one is that pops up.
Those missing files need to be copied to 'C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server' on your server.

Some info on backing up the shared folders: http://usingwindowshomeserver.com/2009/05/17/backing-up-your-windows-home-server-shared-folders-with-an-external-hard-drive/
Good luck!

Hi Dave,
- Did you recently install/uninstall add-ins?
Let's try getting some more info:
- First log into the server via Remote Desktop, then have a look in the Event Viewer and post the errors here. (Have a look in all the categories)
- Then have a look in the log files on the server: SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs
and have a look in the most recent file of: HomeServerConsole.<datetime...>.log and give the output here.
Cheers,

Hi
I had a simlar problem, with my WHS server.
Upon investigation I found that the backup and disk management services were not running. I got the backup service to run, but not the disk management sevices. The service has errored and shut itself down.
Only solution was to re-install.Wednesday, October 7, 2009 11:54 AM -

What can i do to fix the problem? what is the problem?I thought I'd contribute to this post to say that I had this EXACT same issue and just solved it.The problem ended up being that the network card had been disabled. Why, I'm not sure, but it could have been an automatic reaction to setting the IP to one already in use on the network. Anyway, once i knew it was disabled, i re enabled it and all is well again.Hope that helps someone somewhere!- Proposed as answer by Stephen Ermann Sunday, February 27, 2011 3:46 PM

Thanks Dude!!
Just had the same issue.. After reading your post I realised I had taken out the network cable. Plugged it back in and voila.. all goody again!
Just had it re done, so I was starting to pull the hair out of my head already. So basically you saved me from early baldness :)
Cheers,
Dodo
