Can I use a XP Home product key with XP Media Center Edition CD to install XP Home? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I found a computer by the dumpster, it works and has XP Home installed on it. I want to reinstall the OS, but all I have for Windows install CDs is my XP Media Center Edition disc that came with my other computer. The XP Home product key is still on the side of the PC, can I use that XP Home key with the XP MCE media to install XP Home?

Answers

  • No you cannot.  The product key affixed to the PC will only work with the PC manufacturer's OEM Windows XP recovery media.

  • Hello The Gorby,

If the computer you found is from a major manufacturer, you might be able to get Recovery or Reinstallation discs for it from the manufacturer.  Contact them to find out for sure.
