Network back up device does not show up in choices RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB stand alone network back up device today and I cannot get Windows Live One Care to "see" it on my machines running Windows XP. I have all the latest updates for XP on both PCs. If I click on "My Network Places" on my desktop the My Book World appears as a network device and I can access it by double clicking on the icon. When I tried to change my back up location in Windows Live One Care I cannot find the My Book World device listed under the "my Network Places" tab. I don't understand why it does not show up there as it does when I click on the desktop icon. I also have a machine running Windows Vista with Windows Live One Care and it found the device and I was able to back that machine up to it. Is there something I need to enable on the XP machines? One Has XP Home and the other has XP Professional.

  • Using a NAS as the backup destination can be hit or miss. The problem is that the file system and operating system of the NAS can differ widely between devices and OneCare has problems with some of them.
You may be able to point to the NAS by using the absolute path to the shared location instead of "searching" for it - \\server\folder
or you can try using the IP address x.x.x.x\path. Note also that the shared location on the NAS must allow all users to have full access to the location - read/write/delete/etc.

If the WD device came with its own backup software, my recommendation would be to use that software and turn off OneCare backup.

Another option, if you wish to pursue the OneCare backup, would be to create a network Share on the NAS from the Vista machine that has access to the drive, and then configure the Vista machine as your OneCare Circle Hub. Configure Centralized backup for all PCs from the hub, using the network Share defined on the Vista machine as the destination.
