CRM client for Outlook clean install RRS feed

  • Question

I am facing the following challenge: we are preparing a clean image for the training facility for our CRM deployment. When installing these machines it is our goal to wipe them after the user logs off and redeploy a clean image for the new student.

Now I run into three problems with Outlook and the CRM client and I do not know enough about client deployments to solve these, hope you can help:

    1. Outlook doesn't generate a user profile until after the user opens Outlook for the first time

    2. The configuration wizard does not want to run because there is no user profile in Outlook.

    3. On first login to CRM the synchronisation is fixed to that workstation

What I would really like to have is a situation where I have one image with outlook and crm ready installed and only the configuration done automatically when the user logs in, without having to do a reboot. I can't use the login script for this because the Outlook profile needs to exist before the customization wizard can be run.

Is there a practical way around this issue? Or will I be stuck with the situation where I need to have a reboot after the user logs into his workstation?

The third issue seems like something that is scriptable. It is only one selection box to set synchronisation back to that desktop for that user. We use dedicated user accounts for students (student01 etc.) and it would be nice if we don't have to fix users to desktops based on their user account.

Thanks in advance for your information

  • Since this is for training, what about imaging a Windows Configuration with a generic Outlook profile set to some pop3 e-mail account?  Then you can just run the configuration wizard.

Re the synchronization, you can run the diagnostics tool (start-->all programs-->Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0-->Diagnostics) and go to support mode, synchronization tab and disable synchronization prior to running it the first time.

One thing we did that worked really well in a similar training center was to create 12 VMWARE virtual desktops with Outlook and crm configured to the Student01, Student02, Student 03, etc accounts).  Then at the end of a training session we just rolled each back to the original state.

Thanks for your answers. I am using VMware View3 (follow up to VDI) and because I need to take into account a max of 50 concurrent users I am trying to put as much automation etc, into it as I can. Ideally I would configure a so called non-persistent pool of machines that just get destroyed when the student logs off.

Also, the way the training is set up the request from the project has been that everything is as "production-like" as it can be (the implementation and training is done by a third party CRM specialist). This includes email tracking and such (we don't currently use the email router).

  • Re email tracking, I just set up a series of generic gmail or live mail addresses and use them for the training Outlook profiles, since CRM 4 supports pop3 now.
