OEM System Builder Pack RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just received my WHS 2011 OEM System Builder Pack and I'm confused about the wording on the package.  I have a Gateway GM5474 that originally had Vista installed.  I then wiped the drives clean and installed the trial version of WHS then decided that I like the product so I purchased the software.  I chose teh System Builder Pack since the drives are wiped clean of any operating system and I only want WHS 2011 installed.  Did I purchase the correct version or is there another version adapted to my situation?  Also, once I install this software, will I be able to get the updates (if any exist) from the Windows web site?

    Thank you.

  • Fear not, you have the correct version. Once installed and you are happy with the installation you will need to activate the product (within 30 days of the initial installation). You will receive updates via the normal Windows Update process, just as you would with Vista/W7 as soon as the product is installed.

  • Just a quick addition.  I got confused when I saw the UPR1 out there (which I don't have).  This led me to think that once I install the software I may not receive any updates from Microsoft.  Is this correct or will I still get any updates the same way Vista and Win7 do?

    Thanks again.

  • In addition to what Philip has told you:

You won't get any free support from Microsoft. OEM/system builder software is supported by the OEM or system builder, not by Microsoft. If you install it, you become the system builder. And there is no retail "software only" package, with which you might reasonably expect to get support.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
