Clarification on CAL's

Question
-
Hey everyone,
After hours of trying to find some information regarding this issue, I guess I am just going to ask here to see if anyone knows(sorry in advance if this is painfully obvious but I am somehow overlooking it).
So what type of CAL's come with WHS2011? Are they device CAL's/user CAL's/both?
Some hypotheticals I need to get answered before I start assigning them out.
If I create a User and assign it a CAL can it remote access in using that User account? Can multiple people use that login as long as it is not concurrently(think family). If I delete that User account, do I get to reassign the CAL to another user account or is it literally 10 CAL's and once they are used they are gone forever? Same goes for device CAL's, if a PC dies and the owner gets a new one, did I just use 2 CAL's and 1 I will never get back because its for the dead PC?
Thank you in advance for clarification,
William

I think you're trying to think too hard -- remember this is a consumerproduct, so unless you do something it wasn't designed for like addingother server roles, you're not going to run into any CAL issues. Itwas designed with machine CAL's (10 of them), and that's about it. Itallows remote access without having a TS CAL from anywhere, and usersare just used for authentication and shares security.

Per user you allocate "Read/Write", "Read" or "No Access" for each of the shared folders. Additionally, for each user you can allocate "Remote Web Access" permissions. Here you can allow or deny remote access and if "allowed"' give access to "Shared Folders", "Computers", "Media", "Homepage Links" and "Server Dashboard (administrator access required)" rights.

I believe it's device (not sure there are User ones) of which you have 10. If you no longer want a PC to back up to the server you can switch it off, save the existing backups, and have one of your 10 device CALs back. That applies assuming WHS 2011.Saturday, May 21, 2011 1:10 PM

So what does the User function actually do then if I have to specifically allow devices into it? What about Remote Web Access, do I have to use a CAL for each device I want to Remote Web Access with? It just seems like almost 1 person could use up a lot of CAL's that way without really any additional functionality.

Awesome,
Yeah, I figured I was thinking WAY too much into it, but I didn't want to do anything illegal or anything!
So, if I have my users log into my server via Remote Web Access, they can move around photos and home movies? This is mainly for my family to stay connected and our data to remain safe. But if I want an actual machine to interact with it more than just getting data from it,(like security features/backups/whatnot) I will have to put a CAL on it?
Thank you again!
