New Virtual Desktop Licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to locate the Forum I should use to get clarification on the Licensing needed for Virtual Desktop (on HyperV) deployments. I have been told that the HyperV forum is not the correct category. I have pasted my original post below to provide detail on what I am seeking clarification on.

    Thank you - JDM

Trying to get a handle on the license provisioning for a Virtual Desktop deployment. Central location will be running Win2k8 R2 with HyperV. I would like to deploy 15 Windows 7 VMs on HyperV for 20 Remote workstations. The workstations are running XP Pro OEM without SA.

I have been reading about the upcoming changes to VDI licensing but I have not been able to put together a list of licenses needed for both the server and client side. http://tonymackelworth.wordpress.com/2010/03/20/licensing-focus-virtual-desktop-infrastructure-vdi/

I recognize that I need the following:

Win2k Server R2 Standard with HyperV
One Win2k8 CAL for Each remote User

Beyond this it looks like I need to apply VDA licenses for to each of the Remote XP machines because they do not have SA. I believe but am not sure that another option is upgrading the XPs  to SA?

Assuming VDA or SA is applied to the remote machines, what is needed for the VM side with regard to a license and/or media type for deployment of the VMs themselves?

This is for a virtual desktop deployment only, accessed via RDP from remote XPs via IPSEC VPN.

I would also like a better understanding of the management tool licences. The VDI License Suite looks like the solution but it seems way out of reach pricewise if a suite license is required for each desktop VM. Any clarification on this would be much appreciated. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-terminal.aspx
