IE8 fails

Lately I've been getting failures where IE8 shut down or I get a message saying there's a problem. I downloaded IE8 to re-insatll but a message says I have a later version already installed. (I'm running Vista Home EditionVersion 6 Build 6002 and IE8Version 8.0.6001.18882) How do I get rid of the failures? How do I re-install IE8?
