WHS 2011 Client Restore Trouble RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having client resore issues with my WHS 2011.  I have attempted to start the restore wizard from within the client computer I wanted to restore (by copying the client restore files from the server onto the client PC’s desktop), as well as by using the client restore CD (after reboot).  I have tried this approach from 2 different computer multiple times.  I have also attempted to create a USB computer recovery key, with the same result.  As I am attempting to restore the entire OS drive, the restore function within the Dashboard would not be helpful.  The restore wizard starts and discovers the WHS on my network, however, either before or after I put my server password, I get the error message:  “Windows Server Client Backup Restore Wizard has stopped working.”  The client PC is running Win 7 Pro, 64 bit.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Copying the restore files to the desktop of the PC you are trying to restore will not work. The restore wizard will delete all data off the drive you are restoring to. When using the restore cd, are you trying to run it from the clients OS as well?

You need to boot the PC from the restore cd and follow the prompts from there. While going through the wizard at one point  it will ask whether you need to add extra hardware drives (cannot remember the exact wording). go into that window and check you have the hard drive being seen as well as the network card. If not, the drivers will need to be loaded off a flash drive at this point. Then simply follow the prompts to complete the restore.

While there is an option to let the wizard partition the disk automatically, this has never worked successfully for me. I have always had to manually created the 100MB partition, typically needed, as well as creating a 60GB partition for the OS.

Please do not forget if there is any data on D drive, which is the balance of the first disk, it will be deleted while doing the restore. Make certain to copy any data on it away some where safe.
