Very slow boot up time now that Live Mesh is installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer used to start up within 3-4 minutes.  When I say start up, I mean completely load up to where the hard drive light was no longer constantly flashing.

Now that I have Live Mesh installed, it takes at least 10 minutes, and sometimes longer, for the computer to finish booting up.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there anything that can be done about it?

I run Win XP Pro with Service Pack 3.

  • This performance hit is definitely something we're addressing heavily and working on repairing with the next major release.  One thing you can do that helps is to not set Mesh to automatically sign in and start.

  • The hard drive activity could be due to files being synced between your computer and the Live Desktop. If this is the case hard drive activity should return to normal once synchronization is complete.

  • If Jim's speculation is correct, you should see the Live Mesh tray icon spinning when files are being synchronized.
I can't imagine what else Live Mesh would be doing to cause drive activity at boot. Personally, I think the fact that the activity at boot seems to have begun with the installation of Live Mesh may be coincidental, but it could be some indexing going on or Live Mesh checking file states on your Mesh folders - since Live Mesh is also an Explorer extension, I suppose it could cause this.

  • It's definitely not due to files being synced, because it will happen if I reboot my computer after not altering files in that folder.  For instance, I rebooted last night after I did the latest round of Windows Updates from MS, and it took 15 minutes.  The Live Mesh tray icon is not spinning at all during the bootup process.

FYI -- it does this on both my laptop and desktop computers, and neither case started until I installed Live Mesh.

Is there a way for me to disable Live Mesh on startup?  If so, I will time how long it takes for my computer to boot up with it starting, and then without it, and report back here.  I can also post a HiJackThis log, so you can see what all is booting at startup, if that would be helpful.

  • I'd like to confirm this; I assume my computer is much faster than mcomp72's but Live Mesh still causes intense hard drive activity every time it starts.

In windows 7 running without Mesh it takes maybe 10 seconds from when the desktop shows up to when it's usable. With Mesh it's maybe 40 seconds or more, during this time the icon says "Live Mesh is starting".

I don't have the expertise to propose a solution but currently it's rather annoying

  • Interesting observation, k3nt0456. I haven't compared startup times at all. I've got two Vista PCs that are painfully slow to startup, but there's a ton of stuff starting at boot, not just Live Mesh, and OneCare is on those PCs - and it is a notorious startup hog.
On my Windows 7 machines, they all boot very quickly, much better than the Vista machines. I've never compared the start time with and without Live Mesh, though.

And, mcomp72, the brute force way would be to uninstall Live Mesh. It is easy to reinstall again and the PC should be recognized as the same PC on doing so. In the worst case, you'd need to redefine the sync folders. To stop Live Mesh from starting up, go to Services.msc and set the Live Mesh Remote Desktop application to Startup type of Disabled. And in msconfig uncheck Live Mesh. That should stop it from running. I'm not positive about that, but that's all I see in Services and as a running program at startup for Live Mesh.

  • This also happens for me... I can hardly use the computer until Live Mesh has finished thrashing the hard drive on startup...

  • Thanks, Shadow XVII.  I looked at my Live Mesh logs, and mine were also littered with the Failed with WinError 18 error message.

Stephen, any suggestions on what we can do about it?  Does it sound like one of those things where we need to wait for MS to release a new version of Live Mesh?

As for the speed of my computer, I'm not sure how it compares to computers nowadays.  I bought it about 18 months ago.  Here's the specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 3ghz, 1 GB PC6400 RAM, 500 GB SATA II 7200RPM HDD.

  • mcomp72 - the bug report is the way to go. If the logs reveal a cause and the developers are able to fix it, then a future build should fix the issue. Your PC is plenty fast and powerful.

  • I have seen the same.  I have very large P2P meshed folders, probably 25gig all together.  Mesh scans these folders for changes on every restart.  It also does it immediately during the boot process.  Slows booting drastically.  Seconds after I log in the scan begins while all of my other apps are trying to load in the background.  If mesh had a scan delay, say 5 minutes after a restart, or only when disk usage is below say 20%, I would be much happier as I could use my machine for normal usage much faster and the scan can occur in the background when the machine is idle.

Live Sync does the exact same thing, and it more disk intensive.  Really is it necessary to scan the second I log in?

  • Paul a delay (or at least a max I/O requests a second limit) is good idea while the computer itself gets started up...

With all this Windows 7 hype, Live Mesh is the only thing causing it to boot slowly... And I would have guessed Microsoft would be on top of it straight away...

Take a look at the bug report; https://connect.microsoft.com/LiveMesh/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=477231 and vote/verify if it applies to you.

  • Great! Thanks for your reply.

Mesh has finally had its first update in a few months, drought broken by the Snow Leopard fix two days ago; I thought the Mesh team had dispersed to the Windows 7 team or something prior to its release :P

Hopefully we will be able to get our hands on this new update soon!

  • Hi all,

I don't mean to reactive a dormant thread, but I am still having this issue, and it has now been about 5 months since I first started this thread.  No disrespect intended to those people who work on Live Mesh, but that is a very long time for this problem to not be addressed.

Having it take 10 minutes for my computer to fully boot up (and stop the hard drive thrashing) is really ridiculous.  I am now at a point where I need to switch to a different file syncing program (such as Drop Box) if this issue cannot be fixed in the next few weeks.  I understand Live Mesh is still in beta and bugs are par for the course, but after this long, and other people experiencing the problem as noted in the bug report by ShadowXVII, I cannot help but feel like Live Mesh is not a priority at Microsoft.

Can someone on the Live Mesh team give some insight as to how soon we can expect this problem to be fixed?

  • Hey

I've been patiently waiting for this as well. The last 'correspondence' from Ken who said this will be fixed in the 'next major release', and his 'workaround' that doesn't actually work, as well as lack of information from October 09. I still don't understand why that is marked as the answer :P

You are more than right to reactive this thread -- bring it back into light.

From what I know so far; I believe the Live Mesh Team are planning the 'next major release' to be incorporated into 'Windows Live Wave 4'. That is, 'Live Mesh' will be an option under Writer, Messenger and the likes. The latest mention of this 'Wave 4' is from another patiently waiting blogger; post here :P

    I am quite annoyed that there has been no official correspondence for such a long time; here are a few things I'd like to know;
    • Is the project still alive?
    • Has the development team been on leave?
    • When can we expect an official update for Live Mesh? (an exact date please)
    • When can we expect a Wave 4 beta or release?
    • And most of all; when will the issue described in this thread get fixed >_<

  • Sorry that I can't give you any news - Microsoft tends to keep things very close to the vest until they are ready to make an announcement and I have no clue when that will be.

  • Hi,

I'm searching for a solution as well. I have Windows Live Mesh installed on a netbook and am syncing key folders (active projects only). Startup time on the already slow netbook (Asus EEEPC 1005HA) is 10-15 minutes, way too slow to be productive. Also after resuming from hibernation, re-starting is very slow.

I'm looking for a way to run Windows Live Mesh manually.

    thanks.

Since you are referring to Windows Live Mesh, not Live Mesh - www.mesh.com, you are in the wrong forum.

For discussion of the new Windows Live Mesh (formerly Sync), (as well as the released Live Sync version) go here:
