Force Device Sync?

Question
-
Is there any way to force a device to sync?
I'm sharing a folder which contains OneNote notebooks. For some reason, instead of synching the files, one of my computers has a bunch of Mesh Placeholders in the folder where the files should be.
The computer has been this way since installing mesh. Reboot, closing mesh, going online or offline, nothing seems to get it to sync these.
Otherwise Mesh is great! Remote Desktop is a really slow though.
Thanks for fixing the explorer crashes problem!

Hi all,Here is how I force a sync:
- Right click on sys tray icon for Live Mesh.
- Choose "Work Offline"
- Right click on sys tray icon for Live Mesh, again.
- Choose "Work Offline"
When I do this, the files I changed are updated. I assumed that when you come online from being offline, part of the procedure would be to check for updates and update offline changes. Hope this helps until a "sync now" option is provided.- PaulLive Mesh Fan- Proposed as answer by paulWired Friday, September 26, 2008 3:11 PM

Hi Mike,
There is no way today to force a device to sync, though we're looking into adding something like this in the future. If you're seeing the Mesh placeholder files, you can be pretty sure that the files are "in the queue" ready to be downloaded. At some point they will get downloaded (unless the file is physically nowhere to be found in the Mesh--have those files made it up to the Live Desktop?) If you have a lot of other files being downloaded spread across multiple Live Folders, it may take a while to get everything.
Thanks,
Richard

The "Update Live Mesh" option when you right click on the Live Mesh icon in the sys tray is confusing. I thought that option would do a force sync. Intead it updates the live mesh software.Wednesday, May 21, 2008 8:58 PM

Hi Steve,
If you have a suggestion for a way to make it less confusing - or, better yet, not confusing at all :) - we would love to hear from you. You could post a suggestion in our Wish List sticky thread.
Thanks,

Thanks for the answer.
I'm synching between 3 computers, and there are a number of files, but I don't think it's anything excessive.
The files have made it up to the live desktop, and two of the computers are synching the data fine, it's that pesky third computer that's the problem.
The placeholders have been there for at least 1 full week, and still no sync.

Hi Mike,
Would you mind submitting a bug report with the logs from the third computer, the one that's not syncing?
Thanks,
Ben.

Sure Ben.
Although, it actually finally synched this weekend. I'll try to submit it tonight. Thanks!

I wish there was a way to force synce a device or folder as well, seems like a standard need. Or even to "set" device sync priority.
Is it possible to make the "Refresh" button inside a synced folder to cause a sync request or something? I don't have a clue how it all works but that would seem like a logical way to make it work.
As for Steve Sinchaks comment, what if you guys just put "Update Live Mesh Software" instead of "Update Live Mesh", seems like it would solve a bunch of the confusion.
Lastly, I have to say, Live Mesh even at it's current state, is freaking awesome, it's so handy when developing across different locations. Can't wait to actually develop on it and see what you have been working on come PDC and such.

I agree with you Zeb. It would be nice if you could select something to sync right now. I could see this being especially useful if you're headed out, maybe on a flight, or in between flights, and you want to make all your changes available to others. Or even just to make sure you have the latest version of everything before you go.
The problem I was having actually re-appeared again, but there was one update awhile ago that seems to fix it. Now my computers get in sync pretty fast.

I'm having identical problems to those listed above. I'm putting very small text files into folders and it's very random as to whether they sync or not. Very often I simply get place holders for these tiny files on my 2nd PC for days at a time. It's very frustrating.

Hi Wes,
I'm sorry Live Mesh is causing you frustration. If you haven't already done so, and don't mind, could you please submit a bug report with your logs attached so that we can look into what's going on in your case? Instructions for collecting logs and submitting a bug are in an Announcement at the top of the forums.
Thanks,

Hey Paul, that's a great observation! I'm pretty sure that that works as expected.
I've also noticed lately that I don't have those problems nearly as bad as I did back when I originally made this post.
Thanks for the reply!

The fact that Mickeysoft programmers and their directors cannot get such basic things right amazes me. Fancy asking for suggestions such as "Force Sync". Have you MS guys actually tried using Mesh? Every time I use it I WANT to know that my files are sync'ed between home and work. Live Mesh is a great idea. It also works pretty well except that right now I am frustrated because I cannot access the files from home that SHOULD have sync'ed and I cannot seem to force it, even using the offline suggestion.Live Mesh seems to me to be a great idea but MS are once again stuffing up the implementation of it. For example, dumping sync folders onto the desktop instead of asking the user where they want them to go.Regards,RobNow I find that the online info says "up to date" but this is certainly NOT the case. You guys need a 100-level course in logic. It CANNOT be both up-to-date and NOT up to date at the same time and in the same sense!!!

Insults notwithstanding, this is a beta. If you have encountered a bug or undesired behavior, please file a bug report with logs per the information here:

I also occasionally experience the problem discussed here. The going offline/going back online routine has never worked for me. What usually does work is completely exiting Live Mesh (via the systray icon), then restarting the application from the start menu.
When Live Mesh reports a device to be up-to-date, then that just mean the last sync was successful, even if it was a week ago. I agree with the above poster that this is not very useful. In general, I think the software is great but I distrust the synchronization so much that I often manually check the time stamp of important files before opening them in order to avoid synchronization conflicts.Friday, August 7, 2009 3:36 AM -
I agree that a restart is sometimes needed when things get odd. I've also noticed recently that the information in the notifier doesn't match details for a specific folder's news.
I know that there was some work going on in the area of notification and status based on previously submitted feedback. Hopefully, we'll see the fruits of that in the not too distant future. I have no insight into where they are in development right now or what the plans for next update are...

Hi there!
I also encountered frustrating behaviour here with my mesh. :-( I really love that tool, it makes work much easier for me, but my problem is really frustrating. I use Live Mesh on a XP SP3 and Windows 7 RC. When I add and change files on the Win7 machine, everything is fine: all changes are add to Live Desktop and when I start my XP, the files are being downloaded and everything is fine. But if I add or change files on the XP side, the file changes etc. are uploaded to the Live Mesh, but not to Win7 when I start it. :-(
Additionally this is strange, as I it worked some time ago. If I open the notifier on the Win7 side and switch to the "News" section, the latest news is from 28th July 2009! Normally it should be from today, as I updated and changed some minutes ago from XP, e.g.
Also, the notifier tells me, that my Win is up-to-date (which isn't true for now). Going online/offline and restarting did not help. :-(
So, are you still interested in a bug report with my collected mesh logs? Do you have any further advice?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Greetings!Thursday, August 13, 2009 12:28 PM -
I think it would be worth submitting the bug. I've seen some odd behavior with the notifier. It seems to be random and is usually resolved following a reboot of the PC. In my case, my Mesh has several Windows 7, Vista, and XP machines sharing a few folders. I haven't nailed down what causes a file modified on one PC to not sync upwards and accross until a reboot.

Ok, thanks, I submitted the bug and attached the log. I hope it helps. :-)
Rebooting does not help on my side ... :-(

Thanks for submitting the bug report, John, and sorry that the reboot doesn't kick start it for you.
