First, wireless is not the greatest way to access any network device (it will never be as good as wired).  Having said that, can your client connect to the internet via wireless?  Can you ping other clients from that client via wireless?  When you say it "cannot connect to the windows home server", do you mean nothing works (shares, Console, backups, etc) or just certain parts?

  • I can get to the internet and ping other clients on the network.  When i say I cannot connect to the windows home server, I mean that I attempt to login to the server through the Windows Home Server Console through the same notebook that I use when I am connected to the wired network.  I cannot use the console to login to the server and view Shares, Backup users, etc.

  • Hi Tom,

Since this is an old thread: were u ever able to solve this issue?

I'm experiencing the same issue as you: I can connect just FINE to shares on my vista workstation over wireless using my Asus EEE 1000H netbook running on windows 7.

And offcourse I cannot connect using the same netbook to shares on my windows homeserver on the same network (!)

....it times out....and or is very very slow. I tried both XP and Windows 7 and its just not working.

It must have something todo with the netbook since I bought another netbook, an HP mini 210 for my mom ....I was installing some stuff for her tonight and tried to connect to shares on my homeserver.

And guess what: it connected smoothly to the homeserver shares AND the Vista shares!

It must be some setting(s) on the Asus netbook which are wrong or incorrect...but even a fresh install of  windows 7 did not work.

    Grrmmmbl.....anyone....any suggestions?

  • Firewall settings/3rd party firewall?
Wrong IP configuration (i.e. with DNS misconfiguration causing name resolution issues)?
Of course, date, time, time zone on the devices should match.

Check also the FAQ How to Troubleshoot Network Connection Problems with Windows Home Server, if you can find some points there.

  • Olaf, thanks for the suggestion.

Could you help me out  some more?

On my asus netbook which does not connect I am not able to do a nbtstat -a <homeserverIP>

On the new netbook I bought for my mom this is working fine!! (and also this netbook is able to connect to all shares on the homeserver etc etc)

Can you tell me what I need to change to get this fixed?

    Thanks! Florian.

  • Hi Florian,

nbtstat -a works only, if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the WINS tab of the TCP/IP Properties/Advanced Settings in the network adapter properties.

Maybe you could post the output of ipconfig /all for some more analysis.
