  • Windows Home Server Power Pack 3
    Server:  INTEL Core 2 Duo E4500 - 2GB RAM - 2 X 500GB SATA, 1 x 1.5GB SATA
    Console, Backup & Restore, Drive Extender, Remote Access, Storage Manager: 6.0.2423.0

    The Windows Home Server Backup service will not start, followed the instructions in article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339, no success.  Attempted to start the service manually, which resilted in an error that the backup service started and stopped. 

    Event ID 267: Client Backup server failed at d:\wssg_src\whs_pp3\qhs\src\backup\util\diskfile.cpp(145)
    Event ID 272: Unexpected error 0x2 from CreateFile on D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\Index.4096.dat: The system cannot find the file specified.
    Event ID 1280: Persistent Drive Letter Service failed: Starting service: No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot.
    Event ID 1001: Fault bucket 1557785441.
    Event ID 1000: Faulting application HomeServerConsole.exe, version 6.0.2423.0, faulting module BackupCheck.dll, version 6.0.2423.0, fault address 0x000358ff.

    Approximately 2 weeks since this has been ongoing, all updates are current.

  • Please run chkdsk on all the drives in your server.
    I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Ken, thank you for the suggestion, unfortunately I am still having the same issue.  I may have to resort to reinstalling, I have already spent too much time trying to resolve this.  Do you happen to know of a post or link that expolains how to backup the existing data, so I can restore to WHS after the reinstall?

  • If you do an install and select "Server Reinstall" it should preserve your backups and shares.
