The activation appears to be OK.
What happens if you attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer?
This warning can sometimes come because of problems communicating with the validation servers - are you behind a non-windows firewall?

Regarding Office, the Office that is installed on this Packard Bell computer is a volume licensing installation of Office. Individual consumers are not properly sold Volume Licensing licenses for Office, so it is very likely that your use of this Office Professional Plus 2007 is nongenuine.

thanks for your input
when i try that link it throws me to a page offering me MSE, i guess that means it is ok.
one further question to this would be can i install this copy of office onto my new windows 8 laptop ?, i am not entirely used to licence conditions re number of installations i can support , all machines are for my use alone.
as to why it gave me the message i do not know,i have no extra firewalls or anything like that

Quite the oppposite, in fact!
Now that I know MSE is supposedly installed, please return to your first thread in ANSWERS forum to which I'm about to post a new reply => http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/genuine-xp/f75cbab1-4269-450f-8e8b-821c4ac0d6b8

MSE is ONLY offered when Validation is passed - it's be pointless offering it to failures, since it will not install in a system which fails validation.
When validation fails the user is offered routes to make it genuine - usually by purchasing a new license.

it is quite possible that this is what sparked off the problem. though it is nw being confirmed as genuine.
is there any way to specifically check whether office passes validation tests or is it only pssible to do the whole installation in one?

From where did you acquire the license for Office?
If not through your employer or college, then it's almost certainly counterfeit.

MSE is ONLY offered when Validation is passed...
MSE is also only offered to a computer when a Microsoft "detection engine" (e.g., the Validation scanner; Windows Update) cannot identify a valid & fully-functional anti-virus application as being installed.
Meanwhile, the plot has thickened: The OP purchased the used computer circa July 2012, he didn't do a clean install (AKA destructive recovery) of WinXP until January 2013 and he used the hidden Recovery partition to do so. Apparently, either an originally-preinstalled-by-OEM Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial came preinstalled on the computer so the free-trialware would have been installed again during the clean install, However, the OP did not fully-remove said free-trialware before installing MSE on 16 January 2013.
Also note that CCleaner's Registry Cleaner has been in use (no backups) and that the computer's still missing KB2758857, KB2727528, KB2393802 & KB971029 => http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/genuine-xp/f75cbab1-4269-450f-8e8b-821c4ac0d6b8?page=2 &ff

look i an sorry if this seems abandoned. i have moved recently and do not have internet access at present, this is a library computer.i can not make proper investigation of my machine until i have sorted everything out, though there is much for me to look into.i think i may clean install it again, though i don't really use that machine anymore if i can get it to behave properly it will have it's uses.i do appreciate your help in this, but it will be anything up to a month before i can proceed in any way.
thanks
