Error Message : 0XC004E002 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Lenovo laptop is running Windows Vista Business.  I am constantly getting the updates from Microsoft too.  However,  one day when I turn on my computer, the error message 0XC004E002 - " The software licensing Service reported that the licence store contains inocnsistent data. "  appears and my screen turns black.  It requires me to reinstall the Windows, and I lost my Vista CD.  However, I found the product key at the back of my laptop.

Then, I try to back up the whole computer, but it states that my C drive has error and could not back up.  Besides the black screen, it seems that the Windows is working fine except I cannot access "My Picture" because the file is corrupted but it has been a while now.

I have run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool and the result is pasted below.

Please help me to resolve this problem.  Many thanks in advance.

    Best Regards,

    Linda

It looks like Vista's Licensing Store may be corrupt or unreadable for
some reason. Try the following steps to re-create the Store, which should
    correct the problem.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd
    %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to
    complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Re-Activate. (Make
    sure to Activate by Phone)

  • Hi Noel,

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

I ran into the following message right after I select yes.

    System error 5 has occurred

    Access is denied.

    Thanks for your helps.

Or try the steps in Safe Mode.  This way you can ignore steps #5 and #9 since the slsvc does not run in Safe Mode, by default, so there would be no need to turn it off and then back on.

    Thank you,

At what point in the process did you get that error?
the following article may help with it
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555644

Please read the disclaimer on that article before applying the solutions! It
has been through a process of peer review, but has not as such been written
by MS developers, and should therefore be treated with a certain amount of
caution. - it's also written for XP, but may well apply to Vista and W7.

That sounds as if you didn't get the Run As Admin right - try again...
(more details.... looks like it may have been my fault!)

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4a) you will be asked to confirm this - click Continue (If not, then post
    back)
4b) a Command prompt window will open - CHECK that the title bar says
    "Administrator: C:\Windows\system 32\cmd.exe"
    5) Type: net stop slsvc and hit Enter
The message I get at this point is the following:-
    <quote>
The following services are dependent on the Software Licensing service.
Stopping the Software Licensing service will also stop these services.

    ReadyBoost

Do you want to continue this operation?(Y/N? [N]:

    </quote>

at this point you should type "Y" without the quotes.
You should then get the 'stopping service' messages.

If you do, please carry on as in my earlier post.
If you don't, then we have problems! (CACLS reset here we come - more later
    if necessary!)

    Good Luck!
