Alternative to Windows XP upgrade to Genuine version

  I am trying to avoid reformating my main system harddrive and having to reinstall all my old software again. I purchased a windows xp professional at lower price than the latest fee. Is there an alternative system where I can use my new product key. I did try and use my new xp disc to install over the non geneuine system. But the system restore stops the new install. Looks like formatting is the only option. Unless Microsoft are prepared to accept my new key to validate.
