MS Works is not compatable with MS Office?!!!? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just bought a new computer from dell with Vista and MS Works installed on it.  I've been using Windows since '95 and everytime I get a new computer with the latest versions of Windows OS and MS Office software on it I can just transfer documents to my new computer and still use them.  My question is, why.... WHY, now, would Microsoft make a software suite (Works) that is not compatable with its staple and very functional software MS Office?

I just don't get it.  Mircrosoft would actually make a word prossessing program that can't properly view MS Word files.  Is this some kind of sick joke? Now I have to buy 2 software suites to insure my ability to use or alter both file versions (wps, doc).  I really am disappointed in this company yet again.  I'm trying to update my resume and I can't even view it right now; well I can view it but the template is destroyed and the features of works software reminds me of MS Word '95.  I mean, instead of......  whatever, if I buy a computer and have to start all over using some sub par software like Works I might as well switch to Linux, at least there I can find software designed by "real" people for "real" people and not for extremist corporate profiteering scams....

My temporary solution is  http://www.openoffice.org/ ...the way software is meant to be!

Works is usually installed where the OEM has decided not to use Office. Instead you may want to get the full trial of Office.
Office itself has been updated in 2007 to support the new file types. Even older versions of Office without the 2007 Compatbility Pack cannot use the new OpenXML filetypes. So basically, don't trust the manufacturer to give you full versions of software, and just get Office 2007 yourself (or the compatibility pack for lower versions)
