Getting connected with WHS remote

Question

Everything appears to be hooked up correctly. Remote access says Available and all details show checked but I can't access my server using the link connection to my remote server. Any help or ideas are great appreciated.

Thank you for your help. Would I be able to access it thru Windows vista? My laptops are all Vista. Also, I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 when it comes out. Will that be able to connect?
Only if you have the correct versions (just like XP). For Vista, you need Business, Ultimate or Enterprise. For 7, you need Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise.
Also, just for clarification, the OS requirements are only for Remote Desktop through the Remote Access website. The rest of the Remote Access functionality should work regardless of the OS. Is the rest of your Remote Access website functioning? In other words, are you able to download and upload files through the website from outside your household? First, a couple of questions:
1. What operating system is this?
2. What firewalls do you have set up?
3. Have you properly forwarded the ports on your router?
4. Can you access the computers via remote desktop connection from the Start menu?
5. Did you add your home server site to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer?
6. Have you installed the ActiveX plugin for the site?
7. Are you connecting to the Remote Access site from your home network or from outside your home network?
8. Is the server fully updated and is the connector on the computer the latest one?
9. Do you have Remote Access enabled from System Preferences (Right click on My Computer, Select Properties, Click Remote tab)?
Sorry for all the questions; don't feel overwhelmed by them all. I just thought of a number of possibilities all at once.- Edited by kingslaye505 Friday, August 28, 2009 3:18 AM added questions 7, 8, 9

Your Buffalo NAS may be using the same ports that your home server is using for it's web access. Your router can only forward a port to a single computer, unless it also includes reverse proxy features.

Belkin told me the ports are open when needed if the NPuP is set which it is. Just for laughs though I will disconnect the BufaloNas and see if it makes any difference.
Thanks Ken,

The Belkin router assigned the ports
You might try assigning them manually. Also, if you go to Shields Up! and do a custom port scan for 80, 443, and 4125, what are the results? (Make sure your NAS is turned off when you do this.)
I can't get remote desktop to work. The other computer is listed but when I click on it the error message comes up saying the remote computer is disconected. This compuer can't connect to the remote computer.
If you can't get Remote Desktop to work from within your LAN, then WHS is not your problem. What OS are you trying to connect to? (Please be specific, meaning which OS and which version is it.) Did you enable Remote Desktop on the computer you are trying to connect to?
Are these the numbers you asked for?
Yes, that's them, and those are the correct numbers. (I just wanted to make sure your server was completely up-to-date.)

What flavor of XP? Only Professional, Enterprise, and Media Center Edition support incoming Remote Desktop connections. (All versions of Windows support making a connection from that version to a supported OS, however.)
On versions of XP that support incoming Remote Desktop connections, you need to turn that support on (it's off by default). Have you done so? If so, can you make a remote desktop connection from any computer on your LAN to your server, and then try to make a connection from your server to some other computer on your LAN which supports incoming Remote Desktop?

You are not answering the question both Ken and I have asked: exactly which version of XP are you connecting to? (This has nothing to do with service packs.) Go to the computer you are trying to connect to, right click on My Computer, then select Properties. On the General tab (which it should already be on by default), there is a section that says System:. Please let us know everything it says in that section.Sunday, August 30, 2009 7:43 PMModerator -

Please conduct the test I recommended. In more detail:
- From any computer on your network, make a remote desktop connection to your server.
- From that remote desktop connection to your server, attempt to make a remote desktop connection to some computer on your network which you believe to be properly configured to accept such connections.

Ken, I'm able to open the log on window using remote desktop. It asks for username and password. I type in the one I'm using in user accounts but it won't let me log on. The good news is it does open WHS log on window thru remote desktop. I'm still working on logging in. Once I get logged on I will do the other log ons your requested.
Thanks, MarionMonday, August 31, 2009 12:56 AM -
Found out I have to use Administrato as log on name. So I was able to access my WHS thru remote desktop connection. I'm not sure how to make a remote desktop connection to another computer from WHS. I can go into the explorer and click on another computer with no problem. Please direct me how to to what you requested.

That's why you can't connect to it through Remote Desktop. XP Home Edition doesn't allow incoming Remote Desktop Connections. The only versions of XP that accept incoming Remote Desktop Connections are Professional, Media Center Edition 2005, and Tablet Edition. The rest of the system seems to be working. I can't open homeserver.com site but then again I'm using xp home and not pro. From WHS the other computer show in users and I can backup all computers onto the WHS computer nightly. I can also read and write files from all computers to WHS that are within the network. I haven't tried from outside the network because the computer I tried with was xp home version 2002. To answer your question am I able to upload files through the website from outside the household, no.
In the consol under settings, the remote access says "available", not "web sites are on".
Bottom line is I'm happy with WHS. I was just trying to access WHS from outside my network. I will have to upgrade OS's to do this it looks like. Anwer me this. If I can access an outside computer using Windows Pro, will I then be able to access my homerserver.com site? If so, will I be able to access my other computers (running version 2002) or just the WHS?Monday, August 31, 2009 3:38 PM -
The rest of the system seems to be working. I can't open homeserver.com site but then again I'm using xp home and not pro.
The OS doesn't matter for that. To clarify: Remote Access (the xxxxxx.homeserver.com website itself) and Remote Desktop (the Computers tab within the website) are not the same thing. The Remote Access website should work no matter what OS you're using. (It's just the Remote Desktop that requires certain OS types, and that requirement only applies to any computer you want to connect to within your household. The OS doesn't matter on the computer you're connecting from.)
Then something is still not working correctly. (Sorry for the confusion between Remote Access and Remote Desktop.) Have you tried logging into your http://xxxxxx.homeserver.com domain name from outside of your household? If so, what happens when you do that? (Do you get an error message?)
In the consol under settings, the remote access says "available", not "web sites are on".
Then the Remote Access website should work. Also, just to verify that, try this: Open the Console, click the Settings button, then click the Remote Access tab, followed by the Details... button. It will run a quick check (which takes about 15-20 seconds). Once that quick check is complete, please post the results of that here (there should be 4 lines, each with either a green check mark or a red x).
Bottom line is I'm happy with WHS. I was just trying to access WHS from outside my network. I will have to upgrade OS's to do this it looks like.
Nope, not to access your website (again, sorry for the confusion).
Anwer me this. If I can access an outside computer using Windows Pro, will I then be able to access my homerserver.com site? If so, will I be able to access my other computers (running version 2002) or just the WHS?

That's correct. If you look at the Computers tab now, they should all say Not Supported on this Operating System (or something similar) because none of your computers in your household have an OS that will accept incoming Remote Desktop Connections. They need to be the ones I listed above in order for it to work.

One other questions regarding remote with WHS. I have 4 pc's hooked up to my network. Unfortunately they are not compatible to view remotely with WHS (vista basic, xp home, etc). What if I have a machine running Windows xp Pro. Can I access that machine remotely then look at files via my network at my other computers files or will it restrict me to just that computer and files?
Thanks again,

What Remote Desktop does is it allows you to use your computer just like you're sitting at the actual computer, even though you aren't. You get the same desktop, the same applications, the same everything else. So however you have it set up to work when you are physically at the computer, it will have the same functionality through Remote Desktop.Saturday, September 5, 2009 1:09 PMModerator -

Hope that makes sense.

Yes. The requirement "on the road" is not your OS, it's your web browser. You need to be able to run an ActiveX control and that can only be done through Internet Explorer (or Firefox as long as you have the IETab add-in for it).Saturday, September 5, 2009 2:25 PMModerator -
