Office XP Update Failure and Software not Activated RRS feed

  • Question

  •  I'm trying to install KB921596 for Office XP Pro SP3.  The installation fails and I receive the message that Office XP is not activated.  When trying to activate from within an application (Word, for instance), I'm told it is already activated.  I deleted the file %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Office Genuine Advantage\data , as recommended in another post, and then tried to activate Office XP.  I still could not activate, as product is already activated.

Also, I have tried to repair the Office XP installation but get the message:  "Error 1402   Set-Up cannot open registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\giffile\Shell\Open\ddeexec  .

I am 100% certain that my copy of Office XP is valid.  Results of diagnostic tool below.

Two things. First, your Office XP is Not Activated and a Good Key. See below for the second piece.

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue.

The Windows XP Home product key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The Product Key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a Product Key generator. The Product Key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product Keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).   You will find numerous sites where this key has been posted.  Use your favorite search engine and paste in the product key.  Below could be a possible scenario.

There are situations which can cause Windows and Office to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola' no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update or even a template used with an Office Suite. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a Keygen’d Product Key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months or even a year or more then suddenly becomes blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the Software Counterfeiting messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Windows XP Home  before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are several options available for you to get Genuine. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details. The link below provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

Please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

If this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you, who have become victims, to report piracy at the following link.

    http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx

Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise off-load any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive.

Thank you for visiting the OGA program forum.

  • Rick,

Your reply comes as a major surprise.  I purchased this PC with WinXP Home pre-installed from a major retailer whom I don't think would be selling pirated copies of Windows.  When the original hard drive was about to fail, I copied the operating system onto a new hard drive.  I don't know if this has caused a problem.  I have been able to install Win XP updates and software patches for the five years I have owned this PC, so I find it hard to believe that the operating system is not valid.

I purchased Office XP from Software Spectrum based on a program with my company, which is a major company which would not come anywhere near operating on a fuzzy line between ligit and illigit.  Until this last issue of trying to install the latest Office security patch, I  have never had a problem with installing updates in Office.

    Thanks for not helping.

  • Tom409,

I suggest trying to activate Office using the “Activate by Phone” method from the activation Wizard for your Office Program. When your through, reboot. This may or may not provide a resolution for you. Telephone numbers for Activation Centers vary by product license and country/region. Use the number provided on your Activation Wizard screen to call the Microsoft Activation Center.  Please follow the below guidance for telephone activation for activating Office.

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Office by phone, follow these steps:

    1.       Start any Office program.

    2.       In the “Office Activation Wizard”, click Activate by using the Telephone, then click Next

    3.       Read the “Microsoft Office Privacy Policy” page, and then click Next

    4.       In theSelect your location” list, select a country or region. Call the telephone number that is listed on line 2. The customer service agent will ask you for the installation ID and will give you a confirmation ID in return. Type the confirmation ID in the boxes provided.

    5.       Click Next

    6.       On the “Activation Complete” page, click Finish

For more information on how to activate Office, see the following links:

Please submit a service request with Microsoft Product Support. Include your product key for Office so that we may analyze specifics surrounding the problems you are encountering. Then run the diagnostic test again for inclusion with the support incident. This will enable us to review current information after the changes you made.
