  • Here is what happened. My friend has an eMachine computer but lost the restore disk. He has a legit key on his system. I reinstalled the stystem using my XP OEM Disk and Microsoft activated it over the phone. Everything worked fine until Microsoft started the whole WGA crud. Now he is getting a notice that he doesn't have a valid copy when the system boots up and he can't access any secure websites such as www.hotmail.com. I ran the software at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and sure enough the software says the key is genuine. What do I do next to fix this?

Here is the output from the tool copied to the clipboard.

Unfortunately, your copy of Office is not genuine. Are you trying to update Office? If so, then its not a false report... I would recommend taking the copy of Office back to the original retailer to remedy the issue, as the current copy is a Volume License copy not labeled for retail sale.

However, in reference the Windows copy, if you look, it says "Signature Type: Unknown." I would recommend reinstalling the latest full version of WGA Notifications which should clear the issue (http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=458758&SiteID=25)
