  • I had a genuine copy of Windows XP - Home edition on my laptop. But I had someone reformat my computer and they put an illegal copy of Windows XP - Professional edition on it.

So now the windows I'm running is not genuine.

I have a proper CD key for home edition on the bottom of my laptop, but it doesn't seem to work for professional edition.

Is there anyway to go genuine without having to reformat back to home edition? (And no, paying another 100 bucks is not a valid option)

  • Dan,

Sorry, due to the technical differences between Home and Pro, the only thing you can do is a clean installation if you want to go from the bogus Pro to the genuine Home.

Don't forget to offload your data since a clean installation would otherwise destroy it.
