Windows vista saying windows not genuine after 2.5years. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tried to uninstall microsoft office trial so I could install the proper one but it didn't work. Now it's saying that my windows isn't genuine and to enter a product key. When I enter the key it says I can't activate it that way and to do it by phone, I've done the phone thing but that code didn't work either. I can only use my computer in reduced functionality, no start key just internet browser. I've tried all sorts of things to fix it but nothing is working.

Can anyone help? I really need my computer for work and I can't afford a new key.

Software Licensing service is not running.

Are you by any chance using a new Anti-Malware or Anti-Virus (or an upgraded version of an existing one?)

You have a Trusted Store Tamper – which is usually the result of malware, but can also be the result of defective anti-malware apps.

This has disabled the Software Licensing Service (SLSVC)
Download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware from www.malwabytes.org and install it – update it but do NOT accept the offer to run the trial Real-Time protection (it can conflict with other stuff in Vista). The run a Full system scan in you main account, and quick scans in any other user accounts.
    Delete everything it finds.
Then check the system for hard drive problems or file problems, with CHKDSK and SFC....

    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

OK – at least the Software Licensing service is functional now :)  - and the Trusted Store tamper hasn’t updated, so with any luck it’ll have gone.

Next step is to see if we can patch up the Licensing Store to correct the ‘Unlicensed’ error.
Can you read the COA sticker on the machine OK? – if not, then download Belarc Advisor and run it. It will list the Product Keys for some of your installed programs, including Windows. Make a note of the Windows Product Key (NOT The Product ID!)

    then...
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files. This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    Reboot TWICE
If necessary, then you may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. (check again for a COA sticker!)

    Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

The 'Not enough quota' message is relatively rare lately, and isn't directly related to your non-genuine problem (it usually disappears eventually of its own accord after a reboot or two - when it doesn't, then suspect malware)

    It should have done!  <g>
Don’t forget to update to SP2, and install a current Anti-Virus BEFORE reinstating your data and programs.

    Good Luck.
