  • Hello wolf99,

Here in the USA the Windows XP Pro WGA Kit has been priced at $149 including shipping since its inception three+ years ago.  Your Time Zone in the mgadiag report is showing you in Great Britain, and IIRC some folks have posted here in the forum that the GB price is £79, but I can't say for 100% sure.  The price will of course be displayed as part of the ordering process if you decide to order.

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report with annotations:

Windows Product ID: 76487-640-8365391-23026    The value of "640" here indicates a Volume Licensing product.
Windows Product ID Type: 1   The value of "1" here also indicates a Volume Licensing product.

  • Hello Wolf99,

The computer has a widely pirated and now blocked Volume Licensing installation of XP Professional on it.

While the "fella that builds pc's" certainly had every right to raffle off the physical computer itself, he had no ownership of the Windows license on the computer so he had no right to raffle it off.  He might as well have included the title to the Brooklyn Bridge in the raffle, too :-)

Does the computer have a Windows Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) anywhere on it?  (If so, don't post the product key.) For reference view this page:  http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell/content.aspx?displaylang=en&pg=coa   If not on the computer, maybe there was a Windows XP retail box included with the materials you got with the computer; the retail box has the CoA on the boxtop.

If there is a CoA then its very likely the computer is still licensed to run the version and edition of Windows listed on the CoA.

If no CoA, then you're pretty much out of luck.  You'd have to purchase a genuine license for XP (the WGA kit directly from Microsoft is a good bet because (a) you know it's going to be Genuine and (b) it is very difficult to locate reasonably priced legitimate Windows XP licenses because they are out of production), or perhaps use an open source alternative such as Ubuntu Linux.

  • Hi Dan
Thanks for replying, theres no CoA on the outside that I can see (haven't tried underneath yet ;) ) so guess I'll have to see about the WGA kit, what kind of price is the license key option do you know? (There is no CD so prob won't qualify for complimentary offer)

Also, out of interest, could you maybe tell me how you were able to tell this by looking at the MGADiag log?
    Thanks again

  • Hi again,

Have got around to looking to buy one of the electronic keys, but have probably been hit by the idiot syndrome again because I cant seem to find anything at microsoft website about how to buy one, yes I can find the FAQ page on it and pages to track orders of it but not to actually go ahead and actually buy one!

so frustrating to keep getting to pages that recommend buying one and answering any other conceivable questions I might have about it but not actually selling me one!!

if you could point me in the right direction some of my idiot symptoms may abate ;)

    Thanks

  • Hello wolf99,

In order to participate in the Windows Genuine Offer and order a WGA Kit, you can do one of these:

    1.   Visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on Validate Windows.  When Validation fails, you will see an explanation, and on the same page will be links to follow to Get Genuine.  One of the options presented at that point is going to be to purchase a copy of Windows.

    2.  On any of the WGA nag screens you see at startup, or on the WGA star icon in your taskbar, click and you'll have links to "Learn More Online."  These links take you to pretty much the same pages as the Validation failure page as above, where your options will include buying a WGA kit.

Once you pay, you'll get a Product Key emailed to you within a few minutes, and then you'll get a Genuine hologrammed Windows XP installation CD in the mail about a week later.   As big of a PITA as it is, IMO it's worth the trouble to do a clean installation (repartition and reformat) once you get the new genuine CD.  That way you know you have a clean system and a newly installed XP is going to run better, too :-)
