  • Yes of course you are true that Microsoft decided to launch an update number KB971033 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033) to detect more than 70 known activation hacks and exploits.

You can also download it manually via Microsoft website from link http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/5/6/E5611B10-0D6D-4117-8430-A67417AA88CD/Windows6.1-KB971033-x86.MSU

But for you the better bet would be that you should check via Windows Update from the start menu.

But do remember one thing -> this update do not download and installs itself automatically even if your windows update setings are set to 'automatically check for updates and install them'.

You need to manually select this update to download and install it from Windows Update.

This update after downloading and installing on your system will check for updated list of activation exploits as soon as your computer is connected to the internet so as to verify that your copy is genuine.

Since, you are running a genuine version of Windows 7, so need not to worry as you will not see any changes and all the work will be done in background without any user interaction. Better luck for pirates.

I hope that this would satisfy your query !

    Ravi

  • Hello rebelxti666,

The bulk of Windows 7's genuine validation is done from within Windows 7. Microsoft has also just release Windows 7 Online Validation found at http://microsoft.com/genuine and click the Validate Windows button and follow the directions.

The KB971033 that mrravidixit mentioned is not a tool, but a Windows Activation Technologies update that makes Windows 7 ignore over 70+ Windows Activation Hacks. That update will be installed in the process of running the Online Validation that I linked to above.

    Thank you,

  • Yes there is a tool (Offline & Online) for Windows 7 which can tell if your PC is genuine.
You can just download the old tool from the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and run the tool to check your copy of Windows 7.
Alternatively if you want to do online validation, just move to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/ValidateNow.aspx?displaylang=en and click on validate windows to validate your copy of Windows.

The tool which you download to your PC from the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 is actually a validation tool for Windows XP but it can also run on Windows 7 including Windows Vista.

Since Windows 7 and Windows Vista have Windows Activation Technologies instead of Windows Genuine Advantage notifications so wga tool earlier working for Windows XP is actually not meant for Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista have inbullt tool and services collectively called as "WAT (Windows Activation Technologies)" and is installed when windows is installed. Later on Microsoft releases updates to WAT to check activation and licencing hacks.

But the main problem here is that Microsoft Download center uses the earlier version for validation but that  you can also download and install on your PC if you download any WGA protected download from the download center like from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=26f11f0c-0d18-4306-abcf-d4f18c8f5df9

I hope that this answer would satisfy your query.

  • I tried your link to manually download the KB971033 and it will not allow it says it cannot find the site , but it doesn't matter because you already answered my question and I am not worried about my windows 7 genuine test it just I like to know what microsoft is sending down the "pipelines " before I allow it to install on my pc. Had some bad experiences with some untested updates from microsoft before. Again thanks for your help .

Please start again - in your OWN NEW thread, explaining what problems YOU have, and including an MGADiag report
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
     - IN YOUR OWN THREAD, please
