  • Question

  • Hi there

I installed an OEM (bought through Amazon.co.uk AND from Amazon.co.uk rather than one of their merchants).  I installed this XP Pro (SP 2)  on my mothers machine.  It has updated and now is on SP3 and now am getting the counterfeiting issue.  Could you please advise as to why this is happening and what to do?  Thanks

  • Hello JamieEff,

The Windows XP Pro you currently have installed is using a Volume License Product Key (VLK) not an OEM key. This particular key was reported as leaked by it's owner (a company based in the US, I believe) Normally Microsoft would Block the key altogeather (much like the way the VLK key, being used in your Office Pro 2003, has been), but the owner probably requested that Microsoft restrict the key to only be usable within a specific geographical area (probably to avoid the disruption that passing out a replacment key would involve).

First thing to do, is compare the last 15 digits of the Product key listed above in the diagnostic report with the With the Product key that came with your OEM Software.  If they don't match, then try replaceing the bad VLK key with the one that came with the software.  If the key that came with the software also comes up as Non-Genuine or if the VLK key matches the key that came with the software then, it does appear you are a Victum of Piracy.

I highly recommend contacting the person or company that sold you this Non-Genuine software and demand the Genuine Microsoft Software that you paid for (Or at the very least, a refund) I also encourage you to submite a Piracy Report at http://microsoft.com/piracy against the person or company that sold you the software.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hi Darin

Many thanks for your reply - really appreciate it.

I have checked the sticker key against the one above and they do not correspond at all.  Sorry for a stupid question, but how do I go about replacing the bad key with the sticker product key? Do I need to do a reinstall or is there a way of doing this within the current installation?

I bought the software through Amazon.co.uk (not one of their merchants) but I recently had cause to cancel my Amazon account due to fraud so the account that I bought it through is no longer.....

    Thanks again

    Jamie
