Mike Gentry: Your issue is diffrent then the original poster. If you would like me to troubleshoot the issue, please create your own thread and post a disgnostic report
The original poster CrashOz is reporting that he has a Retail version of Vista.
Accoriding to his Diagnostic Report however, the key being used in his Vista is a OEM SLP key (as seen in the Diagnostic Report on line "Windows License Type: OEM SLP"). OEM SLP keys are used on computeres that came with Vista preinstalled and will self-activate only when it detects a Token embeded on that computere's bios (the token is placed there by the computer's manufacturer).
Retail versions of Vista come with a Retail Prodict Key and would show in the Diagnostic Report as "Windows License Type: Retail".
CrashOz: The software you were sold is not a retail copy of Vista. I suggest that you go back to the person or company that sold you this "retail" copy of Vista and demand the Genuine Microsoft Software, that you paid for. I also encouage you to submit a piracy report (regarding this software) at http://microsoft.com/piracy .
Thank you,
Darin

CrashOz,
I got the same error tonight--this after having built this computer 4+ months ago, and having Activated Windows Vista Ultimate within a day of getting it running. This was completely unexpected. I had installed Windows Update changes earlier this week, but I definitely did NOT see any message or encounter any sort of "grace period" message that I have read about elsewhere tonight since getting this problem.... I am using my wife's laptop to do "research". I stumbled across this site as a consequence.
When I used the computer Friday (last) night, everything was fine. When I came home and turned it on tonight, I have a message stating my activation period had expired. My only options appear to be going online and purchasing a new license, or to use the telephone activation. I guess this is the so-called "Reduced Functionality" mode. When I try to input my original Activation code, I am told the key is invalid. Eventually, I also get a small popup displaying the same Error Code/Error Description you got.
I tried the telephone activation. What an absolute joke. Each time I tried it, I opted for the "transfer to a representative, anyway" option, because my Activation Window, when displayed, does NOT present the groups of numbers the phone system apparently expects.
The real person(s), unfortunately, could not help me, though, as, apparently, what is necessary to fix my computer is beyond the training of these first tier activation folks on the phone. AND, what's worse, the Technical Support folks are off for the day. It appears my computer is now being held hostage. I cannot seem to get to the START button--as I no longer have one (and consequently can go nowhere else) to do anything of consequence.
I don't know if this is relevant or not, but my copy of Vista Ultimate was a "Not for Resale" copy that I obtained by attending a Microsoft seminar in Reston, VA, back in the fall. The way this thing works, there is a "PIN" number on the inside of the DVD package. You navigate to a URL written in the DVD package, and input the PIN on the page. You give Microsoft an email address, and they send you a Product code a few minutes later.... It worked very well at the time.
I mention all of this only because I do not believe this is the way a "regularly purchased" product is handled--meaning the key would be contained within the product packaging--just like all their other products are....
I had heard that re-activation was a real possibility if one made "significant" hardware changes on their machine--but I never dreamed this was not limited to just hardware changes--that if "enough" software (and/or device drivers, as I have since learned) change, this could trigger the same sort of thing....
This is absurd. I know this was all implemented to try to prevent piracy, but as I have discovered, this methodology misses the mark, and only alienates legitimate clients. I was actually fairly pleased with how smoothly Vista had been operating on my computer. Until tonight.... Right now, I am so seething mad, I could spit ice cubes. I hope this is resolved in Windows 7. If not, Microsoft can forget about my migrating to that platform.
In the meantime, I have no idea how to even limp along in Reduced Functionality mode.... I see you have some sort of Diagnostic report.... How'd you even get to anything to run it?
If you have any ideas, feel free to pass them on--if I find anything, I'll return the favor.

The Diagnostic report was obtained from the Top of the Forum Page under "Announcements" "Please Read Before Posting" Post.
I will let you know it i get a fix, i have been told to call tomorow also.Sunday, February 15, 2009 4:30 AM -
CrashOz,
This is because you have either replaced the mobo, or flashed the BIOS. There is no SLIC table. you're using an OEM SLP.
Mike Gentry,
Please post in a new thread, with WGA Diagnostics.- Proposed as answer by motherboardlove Sunday, February 15, 2009 10:43 PM

It is not necessarily due to the replacement of a motherboard--or for that matter, any other piece of hardware. I learned from Microsoft Technical support this afternoon, that this wonderful problem is, also, due to the installation of Windows Updates--as was done in my particular case....
Apparently, Windows Updates can corrupt a token file used by the Software Licensing Service resulting in both erroneous Windows Activation messages, as well as subsequent failures to input a Product Key. Regrettably, the source of this corruption (i.e., via Windows Update) has remained elusive--much to Microsoft's dismay, I can well imagine.
Microsoft Technical support provided me with a new key, but we also had to rename my existing token file in order to get the new key to work.
Because my computer is now operational, once more, it is not really necessary to submit a diagnostic report. This would be especially true now that I have new key and the "symptoms" I was experiencing last night no longer exist.
As I indicated in my original post last night, I had also learned that this issue can be set off by installing new software--not just hardware. Because software is such a transitory medium, using such as part of a scheme to regulate/determine the "Genuine" nature of the OS installed, in my estimation, is not exceptionally wise.
I sincerely hope this present mechanism is scrapped for Windows 7.
CrashOz--I hope you are able to restore operation to your machine, too. I had to have a new key--and assistance from Microsoft. They're closed for the day by now, though.
