"This copy of Windows is not genuine" message RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I turn on the computer I get a "This copy of windows is not genuine" message.

Windows was already installed when I bought it and I've had it for around 18 months with nothing like this before. Why am I suddenly getting this? What's the problem?!

    1. Start->Run
    2. Enter "WgaTray /b"
    3. Press OK
    4. Log on and off a couple times.

Let me know if you still see the "Get Genuine/Later" dialog.

  • I don't really understand the question. Maybe I'm posting in the wrong place but I ended up here.

Basically I turn on my computer as I have done for the past year and a half, but this time I get "This copy of windows is not genuine" in the bottom right and also a box in the middle of the screen with 'resolve later' and 'Get genuine'. I clicked 'get genuine' and was taken to a microsoft web site, had no idea what to do and found a link to here.

I have no idea what's going on or what I'm supposed to do?!

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Do you mean this?

"You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. The Windows product key installed on this computer is not genuine".

Can you run this tool: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and press "copy to clipboard" and paste the contents in a reply here? Thanks!

Your computer is using a Volume License Key that has been blocked by the WGA service. Volume License keys are mostly for corporate use and are not for sale as retail.

Can you verify that your COA matches your Product Key? If it does not, the same advice (given above) will follow:

1 - Reinstall WIndows so your COA matches your Product Key (install using your COA as the Product Key) - This is the preferred method by Microsoft, as it will be a fresh copy, void of potential hacked binary files and security loops that may have been created to bypass WGA. We know this is usually not the user preference, but it is the safest method.

2 - WGA is underway to create a tool that will allow you to switch your current invalid/non-genuine Product Key being used to your COA sticker *ONLY*. There's no slated timeline, but it will be soon. This will allow you to change product keys being used without a reinstall.

HOWEVER, if it DOES match, I suggest taking the media back to the reseller (best buy?) to resolve the problem, or filing a Counterfeit report with Microsoft. If the report is of high quality media, you may qualify for a free WGA kit. Otherwise, you can purchase a WGA kit directly from Microsoft.

    I hope this helps,

  • I don’t really understand. For a start I don’t know what COA means!

Also I don't think I have a product key. I bought the computer with Windows already installed. I don't have windows on CD or anthing so I can't reinstall it (or can I?!) If I'd known about this when I first bought the computer I'd take it back but it's been over a year. I don't have the receipt and I don't think the place is even there anymore.

Thanks for you help but you don’t need to bother anymore. I can do without the hassle. It's mildly irritating to have to get that message every time I turn the computer on but I'll live with it. It's put me right of buying a new computer though. Next time I'll be going to ebay!

  • I have been getting the same message and so did some research.  I bought my version of windows from a surplus store online without reading their disclosures before I purchased it.  It seems some computer companies as well as online "surplus software" stores, are able to sell OEM versions of Windows.  Meaning they can sell the same product to as many people as they want and the only people at fault is the buyer.  We are not able to get any updates, or help of any kind if we purchase these types of software.  The bad thing is, there are alot of people like me who don't read the "fine print" and get left holding the bag.  I am now out the 200 dollars I spent on my version and have to pay another 150 to make it authentic.

COA information can be located here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

Please ensure the copy of Windows you are purchasing is Genuine, however.

  • I'm sorry Shirley :(

I definitely understand the predicament you're facing currently, as one of the goals of the WGA service is to inform the user of companies (like the online surplus store) that may be doing illegitimate business.

Please note that if you have a high quality counterfeit media, you can submit a counterfeit report, which may qualify you for a free WGA kit. Saves 150$, and can't hurt to try.

I've had this laptop for a few months - bought it on eBay

I've been on-line a lot, us MS autmatic update, but just in the last coupleof days I've been getting the 'not genuine' message. I've run the tool and copied the text in here.

Have I been caught out with an illegal copy of WIndows?

It's an HP Omnibook, so it must have had a real copy of Windows on it once upon a time

  • The CD says Windows XP Professional Upgrade and it came from Microsoft.  I don't know why your utility says it is a volume license.  Would Microsoft have a record of this sale?  This has been quite a few years ago and I don't have the order number anymore.

Our team, due to legal reasons with PII (personal identifiable information), we can't directly look up information regarding your order. Microsoft respects the privacy of all users, especially when it comes to sensitive material such as this.

You would need an order number, however, to track down anything with our support team.

XP Pro "Upgrade" CD's are not availible as Volume License sales... Volume Licenses are only available for mostly corporate use and are not for sale as a retail item.

I hope this does truly help you,

    -Phil Liu

  • Jgravel1:

The current Product Key being used on your system is non-genuine (labeled Invalid Product Key) for one of two reasons:

    - The key was made using a non-Microsoft sanctioned Key Generator

    - The key was reported lost or stolen from the original purchaser.

I would suggest taking the computer back to where you last had it serviced to get things cleared up.

  • I tried to submit a counterfeit report, but the cds that I was sent, don't have holograms. they look exactly like the CDs that came with my computer and have the Microsoft office logo and say "For distribution with a new PC only.  For product support, contact the manufacturer of your PC.  I sent an email to the surplus store asking for a refund but of course it has been so long that I no longer have the original packaging or the reciept so they won't give me a refund.  Also, since the CDs do not have the hologram, I am not eligible for the free kit.

  • Ok. this is my story..  I was trying to update my computer and at the same time, get the updated DirectX, and on the site for me to continue update , i have to download Windows Genuine in order to get more updates.  So i was stupid enough to click it, and download it.  Yet, it still doesnt let me download it, and i was surely confused...The next day, my computer starts to tell me that the Windows Genuine is Counterfeit and that i am a victim of it.  I tried to scan my computer with my anti virus just to make sure that it wasn't a virus, but nothing came up.  Next, i went to the site to see whether if i can resolve it, but all there to it was to buy the pack...  I went to the site were i can fill out information where i can get one free, but i didn't buy the CD.  (like i said up there.. i downloaded it) I had been sending a comment/email from the site and i got a reply, but it didnt answer my question on how to uninstall it.  The main thing it said was to buy the Pack and i was pretty much upset.  I don't even have the money to purchase the Pack, and if you were to say try to earn some money from working... Im not even old enough to even be allowed to work, not like my mom would even let me...    So is there any OTHER way to fix it or uninstall it instead of buying the disk??

  • I have investigated this situation and have come to the conclusion that this is in fact illegal extortion by MS.

Quite simply, it is a money making scam, telling users of genuine versions of windows that they have a pirated version and holding them to ransom by denying them important software updates unless they pay a large sum of money.

This is extremely disturbing and could in fact back fire so badly on MS, that the compensation lawsuits will vastly outweigh the money collected by the scam.

I would suggest that MS release a fix to remove this patch very soon, together with a public apology and refund the money taken from users of genuine software.

I know a lot of people who have paid well over £250 for the full boxed version of Windows XP Pro, which has been validated and worked perfectly for the past 2 years.

Then, just this April, everyone is getting this message, if you don't smell a rat here, then you need to take your fingers out of your nose. It is WRONG, ILLEGAL and MS should be ashamed.

I and the many users of genuine software await the very poor excuse MS will come out with to cover up this scam.

  • MadMiff,

No one is ever happy about being cheated (see my last few sentences), so I understand your anger if you have just been informed that you paid a lot of money for counterfeit software.  It's just like someone put their hand in your pocket and stole the money out of it.

But blaming MS for cracking down on counterfeit software is like blaming your country's government for allowing the currency to be counterfeited.  It's not the government's fault, it's the criminals' fault, and the person holding the counterfeit is the victim.  But, in fact MS gives you a better deal than your gov't. would, because if you've been duped by a high-quality counterfeit, and you send it to MS, they will replace it for free.  Ha, just try to get that same deal from a bank or your gov't.!

If you read the posts on this site you will learn that once diagnostic tools are run, many people are learning that their computers are running bogus copies of XP.  In a lot of cases it is from the buyer being cheated by the seller of either the computer or the software if they bought the software separately, but in a surprising number of cases, it's because the people had their computers repaired by untrained technicians who replaced a perfectly legal copy of XP with a pirated copy.  Once their situation is analyzed here, they can be instructed to install the right copy of XP and then they are perfectly legal again.

There have been some technical issues that have created error messages when people are trying to either use Windows Update or to download from MS, but acccording to posts from MS, the percentage of problems is a lot less than they had anticipated.  Even if you get it 99.9% correct, when there are 100 million copies of XP installed, 99.9% still means a hundred thousand people might have a problem.

Despite your incorrect claim that MS is withholding important updates, the reality is that even with an acknowledged counterfeit copy, if XP is set to get its Updates automatically, the computer will still received security-related updates.  Non-critical updates and nice-to-have software is, of course, blocked from being downloaded by counterfeit copies of XP.

As a MS stockholder, I applaud the implementation of Windows Validation, Windows Genuine Advantage, and the WGA notifications program.  In my view these programs are putting money that was stolen by pirates and counterfeiters back into my pocket .  Remember from the first sentence above, no one is ever happy about being cheated.  Personally, I think they should "tighten the screws" even tighter.

  • I totally agree with this!

I had my computer crash "Fatal System Error" after running the "Genuine WGA" install. Was told I did not have a "genuine" Windows XP. When I rebooted, the dreaded blue screen of death and "Fatal System Error"

Computer bought brand new from Dell in 2002, have COA (I know I made sure the label was put on PC Case).  Dell is not a fly by night organization, it is a global company. Of course it had to crash 3 days before Tax Season ended and took over 3 days getting everything reinstalled. What a nightmare!  Had to reinstall EVERY software package plus update EVERY software package.  Don't install MS office 2003 before MS Office XP.  Lost music license's, lost a lot of various tweaks, downloads etc.

I am not happy!  If this is how MS treats it's customers who are legal and purchased genuine software with a new PC and assume everything is fine.  If I could purchase a MAC and run my tax software, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I wish Mr. Gates would listen!

  • Mikeh99,

May I suggest starting your own thread in this forum?  This thread is almost a month old, up to three pages, and is rambling all over the place and your post might get lost or delayed.

You might want to title it with the error code, something like:  "Need Help:  Genuine XP but getting Error:0x80072efd"

    Good Luck!

  • Well its not just me getting the "new" message. I also bought my computer 2 years ago with Windows XP SP1 installed . I acctivated my windows XP 2 years ago! I than got Service Pack 2 Installed.

When I added a 1GB module to the RAM I was asked to activate again...... I found it strange...... it is hardware not software ! I reactivated !

I download all critical updates , windows updates and Microsoft Updates !

I cant believe that Microsoft is telling me now that my windows XP Home Edition is not genuine........ !!!!

My PC was bought at a very well known store all over my country !!!!

Finally........ I will not buy a new key , its very expensive and I already have one!

Why buy what I already have and its Genuine !!!!! ??????

This is Good Bye to Microsoft ! I will buy an Apple computer!!!

End of problems with you.... Microsoft!!!!

    Bye

  • i am not sure if your issue was resolved, however, if you look on the bottom or side of your computer, it will have the Windows serial number or key if the copy is valid,  at least usually.  If you bought this from someone else it is possible that Windows is fake.  It only means that you wont get updates.  IF you can live with that and the stupid popup then you may be fine.

I am not sure why you are getting the validation error all of a sudden so I cant help there. It is frustrating.

Just a suggestion, I would buy new for sure and I would go with a big company that is sure to be upright in its practices.  I have both Dell and Gateway computers and have been very satisfied.

  • Every new message that appears on this forum just goes further to prove my point.

There are bugs in software. FACT!

When will MS admit that there is a bug in the WGA update?

This is what has happened, people bought expensive genuine brand new versions of windows, then they had to validate it.

The keys were stored on a central database, so far so good.

Then MS release WGA, what this does is check your key with those stored on the database, the trouble is, if it finds a match it thinks that the key must be a duplicate, rather than realising that the reason the key is on the database is because you put it there when you validated.

Come on MS, we all hate pirates, we all want to see the heads of virus writers cut off and we all want to watch as the hands of spammers are dipped into acid. But if you tar every user of your software with the same brush, you will have no users, with no users you will have no money, with no money you will have no reason to exist.

Bill Gate is a clever man, but I don't think he pulls the strings at MS anymore, he has been pushed to the back burner by corrupt greedy con men, who are now trying a last ditch attempt to rake in some money before doing a runner.

It is very sad to see such a successful company become so arrogant and greedy that it actually ends up going bust.

  • Alf777,

May I suggest starting your own thread in this forum?  This thread is three pages long and almost a month old.

When you post, please post the results of the diagnostic tool available here:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012  The tool obscures sensitive information.  Click Copy to clipboard and then paste into your thread.

Since you computer came with XP Home preinstalled, you should have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) affixed to the computer, normally on the side or top or back.  Please tell us what edition of XP is on the COA (Home, Pro, Media Center), and tell us if the words "OEM Software" or the computer manufacturer's name appears in black lettering on the COA.  Tell us if you received any CDs with the computer and if so, are the Microsoft CDs or are they from the computer manufacturer?

Finally, compare the Product Key printed on the COA with the partial Product Key that will be reported by the tool on the second line.  DO NOT post the key, but tell us whether the keys match or not.

    Good Luck!

  • This huge problem with WGA and This Copy of Windows is not Genuine is a mess.

1- Which copy ? Windows 95.... Windows 98....... Windows 2000....... Windows NT.......... Windows XP and so on ????!!

2- We all know that many people have Non Genuine windows XP .  I  know 2 pearsons who have non genuine and the "funny" and "weird" is that they are not having the problem of those who have windows xp Genuine......  like me and Thousands or Millions of people around the world.

3- I have contacted Microsoft in Portugal by e-mail and ..... no reply........ !!!!   I have contacted Microsoft by e-mail in USA and I got

    a reply :

Thank you to Microsoft in USA ! Thank you to Harpreet ! A reply as it should be, polite and usefull ! Not somehow

rude like sometimes from Microsoft in Lisboa - Portugal !!!!!!!

    Now :

1- Rules from Microsoft change from USA to Europe.  OK !

2- Rules also change inside USA ! From State to State . OK !

3- But the BIG Issue here is not rules changing from country to country or within USA !

4- Reading the Privacy Statement from Microsoft regarding windows xp activation it says :

" Quote "  Microsoft asks that you activate windows so that we may verify that your installation is done with a Genuine Microsoft product "Unquote"

5- What does this means? It means that when we activate windows xp , Microsoft verifies that the installation is done and

with a Genuine Microsoft product !!!!  Rules dont apply here, why ? When we activate they KNOW if the product is genuine !!!!

If its Genuine no problem ! If  its not it will be detected soon, very soon !!!!!!!! No matter in which country we activate !!!!!!

6- Why non genuine products keep running on wheels with those 2 persons I know and many other ? They get patches and

they go to Hackers and Crackers sites !!!!!

7- GOD !  It is impossible that , in my case, my PC  came from a well know store in Portugal with Windows XP Home Edition SP1

already installed , I activated within the 30 days, and this was two (2) years ago !!!!!!!! I have more than 130 Updates made !!!!!

    8- Microsoft takes 2 years to tell me a lie...... ??? !!!!!!!!!!

9- Mr. Bill Gates and Mr. Steve Balmer leave your HUGE Boats and solve this HUGE PROBLEM !!!!!!

10- At this hour 4.20am who am I going to call ??????? And its useless to call Microsoft in Portugal during the day , they gave

a phone number to solve this........  I called that number----------- GOD........... A man from Egypt from Microsoft was talking to me

from EGYPT ......... !!!!!!!!!!!!!  When I hang up I called Microsoft in Portugal again to ask why EGYPT ????? Because EGYPT

takes care of  Microsoft problems of all the EUROPE..............

  • Alf777,

I posted the following to your first message dated 5-31-06:

    "Alf777,

    Good Luck!"

I think it is still good advice.  We need some factual information from you in order to help you.

My computer says that it cannot find "WgaTray /b"

Please start your OWN thread - and include an MGADiag report.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
