replace HD now Windows 7 not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently had to replace my failing hard drive. I was able to clone the old drive and get the new drive to work so I thought.

now I get that my version of windows isn't valid.

I tried the driver update that was listed in another thread but it said something to the effect that my system didn't meet the requirements for it.

    any help would be great.

my diagnostic result are listed below

    Thanks

  • Sorry about that - my eyes are getting so bad that it's difficult to read the screen all day and then come on the forums :(

So KB3004394 isn't installed... this (taken together with the dates of the files from the farbar report) implies that the machine has been damaged since at least November 2014!

I rather think that at least a repair install is required :(

See here for the best set of instructions I know for that...

    Follow the
instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

    - and they should help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)

Always ask questions first if you're unsure - either here, or in sevenforums.

    Good luck with it!

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • Thanks Noel

When I try and install the Driver it says my system doesn't meet the minimum requirements to install the drivers.

  • Thanks

It says that my computer has the current driver 8.9.2.1002 and the one I am trying to down load is older 8.9.0.1023

    do I want to continue?

    I selected NO.

should I select yes and install the older driver?

    thanks

    John

  • It's worth a try...

Dell's latest offering for your machine appears to be v7.8 - and the latest Intel one is the one I pointed at (8.9.0).

Where you managed to get v8.9.2 from I have no idea! ;)

  • Noel

I down loaded the driver but it doesn't appear that anything has changed.

I rebooted the system 3 times

    Thanks

  • Oh dear :( still no change.

Please open Device Manager - are there any devices showing with Yellow flags or red crosses? if so, which?

If there are no errors showing, close device manager, and follow the instructions below...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your OneDrive or DropBox Public folder, and post a link - also post a new MGADiag report.

  • I didn't find anything in the device manager that had yellow flags or red crosses.

I ran the CHKDSK and SFC

the only error I got was "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them...."

The dropbox link for the CBS.log file is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7s4i73gee4linxd/CBS.log?dl=0

sorry I was unable to compress it. but the file isn't that huge.

  • Hmm - the errors in the CBS log are fairly standard, and if I'm right will sort themselves out once we get updates working again.

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your OneDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • Internet explorer wont load the page.

I downloaded through crome and when I try and install/run I get the following: "Installer Encountered an Error: 0xc8000247"

  • Hmm - it sounds as if you have some major problems in the background!

    See if this works...

If KB3004394 is installed, uninstall it, and reboot twice.

Do a Check for Updates, and install the new version of KB3004394, and any other updates (if they will install!)

    reboot again, and
run a new MGADiag report, and post it.

  • I would agree with some major problems in the background.

when I go to updates it tells me that windows can't check for updates because that service isn't currently running.

grrr technology is great when it works

  • OK, in that case....

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

  • That all looks normal enough, although the file versions seem old - I think you really need to uninstall KB3004394...

    Try this...

    Close all open windows.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

    wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

    and hit the Enter key

Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,

    Reboot TWICE.

Then visit Windows Update and see what happens (it may take a long time to do the initial check for updates, but be patient).

  • there wasn't any output after running that command.

after I rebooted twice and go to the windows update it says that it isn't available because that service isn't running.....

  • OMG! - that was completely the wrong KB that we removed then! (My fault for copy-pasting on the sly while at work )

    Let's try again..
