outlook Express Backup Files

  I allowed Microsoft Express Outlook Express to compact my files.  It wiped out my "sent items" folder and created a "sent items.bak" which it put in my recycle bin.  However, when double click on the file and try to restore it nothing happens.  How can I retrieve my sent items that were deleted during compacting?
