Windows 7 - You may be a victim of software counterfeiting.

Question
-
After applying some Windows updates & rebooting; I now get the "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting." message. That's incorrect since the Win7Pro SP1 is still on the OEM laptop from Dell. How can I fix this?

Use Internet Explorer, rather than Chrome - see if that completes properly.

I did download & run the WindowsActivationUpdate.exe; but that did not work. It ended with this error message: "Update installation failed. Error information - 0x80070002".Wednesday, January 9, 2013 8:23 PM

What happens if you validate at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate ?
There are no obvious errors in your report.

That is the site where I downloaded the WindowsActivationUpdate.exe from. It wants that to complete before it allows me to click the "Continue" button at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate.Wednesday, January 9, 2013 8:52 PM

Perhaps the WindowsActivationUpdate.exe did what it is supposed to do, but it gave the error due to some anomaly. I'll try the old 'reboot' to see if that helps.Wednesday, January 9, 2013 8:54 PM

After rebooting, the "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine" is no longer in the lower right corner; and no pop-up "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" message. The Diagnostics report that I posted was after running the WindowsActivationUpdate.exe from the http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate site. So, it must've fixed it; but gave a false error message. When I go there now, it still states that I need to download the Windows Validation Components... Not sure if I need to bother at this point.Wednesday, January 9, 2013 9:22 PM

No problem - FireFox has similar problems coping with the ActiveX component of validation.
