  • Hi Robert,

I am assuming you are getting the update thru the Automatic Update service. This is a rare issue, but we think that when Automatic Update downloaded this update to your computer, it may have become corrupted. Download and try to install this update from this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498 and see it it will install correctly.

    Thank you,

  • Thanks for the reply Darin, but I had the same issue when running the file from that link. No matter if I ran it from temp or downloaded it then ran it etc.

I'm guessing that this is keeping me from any other updates since i can't get past this one so Please Help. I don't want to re-install windows.

And the yellow shield constantly popping up is also kind of annoying.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  • Robert:

Are you running the installation package under Administrator?

Do you have the C:\windows\system32 directory under READ ONLY? (It should *not* be read-only).

  • I have the same issue.  I am running under administrator.  I checked the system32 folder, and it was read only.  I reset it to not read only and still have the installation problem.
    Tuesday, April 10, 2007 11:12 AM
  • The following fixed the problem:

    1)     Open a command prompt (click start, then run, then type in "cmd")

    2)     type in "cd c:\windows\system32"

    3)     type in "Rename wgalogon.dll wgalogon.dll.bak"

    4)     type in "Rename legitcheckcontrol.dll legitcheckcontrol.dll.bak"

    5)     Reboot

    6)     Reinstall directly from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498

  • Hey phil,

still no luck on my end. i ran as the administrator and a user with administrator privladges. tried unchecking the read-only then installing, but still no go. i did however notice it set itself right back to read only though. i also made sure i had "full control" under the advanced part but still nothing.

a litte more info on the problem though... i'm noticing that the "access is denied" error is coming up when it gets to the "updating the registry keys" part. not sure if that helps any.

thanks for all the help but i still need more,

    Robert

  • Robert:

Would you be willing (and are you technically capable enough) to run a command from the command line to generate a log-file for me to take a look at?

If so, I need you to download the stand-alone package from: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498

From there, you need to run the command-line "WindowsXP-KB892130-ENU-x86.exe /log:wga_setup.txt" to generate a log file - which you can post its contents here (no any personal information is posted in that at ALL).

If you would feel more comfortable, I can help you via e-mail. Please let me know which you prefer.

  • yes i'm comfortable with running commands.

however, when i downloaded the link (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498) you gave me i got this file (which i've downloaded a lot of times now):

    WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86-Standalone.exe

so i typed in what you wrote but later switched the names (noticing the difference) just thinking maybe you got it wrong. ex:

    WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86-Standalone.exe /log:wga_setup.txt

but it said that there was a syntax error. i'm not familiar with the log cmd and help didn't seem to recognize it so i couldn't troubleshoot.

do you recognize something wrong with it?

  • Oops! Sorry Bert.

The correct line for KB905474 for logging is:

    WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86-Standalone.exe /log:C:\log.txt

  • Still getting an error.

    Specifically

    Subject:  Wga_Notify_Iexpress.exe

Error:  Command line option syntax error. Type Command /? for help.

    Sorry for the trouble,

  • Hi Robert,

We have a preliminary fix that we would like you to try.

From our tests with other users, the installation is repeatedly failing when the file WgaLogon.dll tries to install. Our Devs suggest the following steps:

    1) Navigate to the Windows/system32 folder
    2) Find the file "WgaLogon.dll"
    3) Rename that file to WgaLogon.dll.old
    4) Reboot and rerun the Stand-alone installer (the one that you downloaded from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498)

Please post back with the results!

    Thank you,

  • I Have the very same problem. I have been following the progress (or lack of it!) with great interest. It seems that whatever I try ends up giving the same negative result! I tried to re-allocate "System" permissios to the whole hard disk without success. Keep on trying guys.

  • Simon,

Please confirm that the steps above (i.e. renaming the "WgaLogon.dll" file to "WgaLogon.dll.old") did not work for you.

If those steps did not work for you, please follow the below steps

    1) go to your Windows folder aNd find the "WgaNotify.log" file.

    2) Copy the contents of that file.

    3) Create a "New thread" on this forum.

    4) Paste the contents into the new thread.

    5) Also give a short description of your issue. (Including what troubleshooting steps you have already tried)

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith

  • Hi Robert,

I just talked to the Software Design Engineer for WGA and it appears that your issue is diffrent then some other's "Access Denied" issue. He suggests going to the Windows\system32 folder and delete the LegitCheckControl.DLL file and try the install again.

    Thanks again for your help,

    Darin Smith

     Hello Everyone

I came across the same problem when I tried to update my computer via Windows Update. I followed Darin's instructions and the install process for the stand-alone installer completed sucessfully.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Darin,

Sorry about the long delay but I was away and have just come back! ok I followed your instructions and the contents of the WgaNotify.log file is pasted below. I looked at the contents and there appear to be numerous "failed" statements. I have tried everthing that I have seen on this site and I still get the same result: access dnied. I am logged on as an Administrator and I have checked to see if the Windows or System 32 are read only and they are only partially read only as on my other computers, so basically I have further clue as to what should be done.

  • Hi Simon,

You mentioned that you tried the other possable fixes, but you did not answer my request for confirmation that you tried renaming WgaLogon.dll (see below steps). Would you try this and confirm that has or has not resolved your issue.

    1) Navigate to the Windows/system32 folder

    2) Find the file "WgaLogon.dll"

    3) Rename that file to WgaLogon.dll.old

    4) Reboot and rerun the Stand-alone installer (the one that you downloaded from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498)

If this does not work, then I suggest creating a free WGA Service Request at https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860 and post the confirmation number so I may follow the progress of the escalation.

    Thank you,

    Tuesday, April 10, 2007 8:22 AM

    Tuesday, April 10, 2007 6:48 PM
  • Still getting an error.

    Specifically

    Subject:  Wga_Notify_Iexpress.exe

Error:  Command line option syntax error. Type Command /? for help.

    Sorry for the trouble,

  • Hi Robert,

We have a preliminary fix that we would like you to try.

From our tests with other users, the installation is repeatedly failing when the file WgaLogon.dll tries to install. Our Devs suggest the following steps:

    1) Navigate to the Windows/system32 folder
    2) Find the file "WgaLogon.dll"
    3) Rename that file to WgaLogon.dll.old
    4) Reboot and rerun the Stand-alone installer (the one that you downloaded from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498)

Please post back with the results!

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith
