When you get the new product key via email, you also get a link to a utility that is designed to scan XP system files that impact upon successfully activating and validating, and to repair those files if damaged or altered.

Try restarting and begin the process all over, following the steps in order.

If this new try is not successful, then the repair tool is not capable of repairing your installation of XP to the degree needed to activate.  In such case, you will have to wait until the accompanying XP CD arrives.

  • Tbc94,

Your installation of XP is showing as not yet being activated.  It could be as simple as activating the revised installation of XP.

    Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Activate Windows.

Or if you prefer a command: Start>Run, type "oobe/msoobe.exe /a" without the quotes, click OK.

  • Thanks,

But this is when the trouble starts…I input the new product key from the e-mail that I received from Microsoft and then try to active it and it comes back with an incorrect product key….It gets better, After that I try to do it over the phone with a Microsoft tech…generate a new installation key which is 9 groups of 6 numbers I call in and they tell me that there is a problem with that key and even went as far as gave a new product key which did the same thing…Now my windows XP Pro works fine except for that icon in my tray that keeps coming up and tell me to activate my windows in 30 days and counting….Thanks Tom
