Activating Vista RRS feed

I am trying to activate my Vista Home Premium and am getting a message that this product key is only for an upgrade and not a 1st time install.

I have replaced parts of my old PC running Windows XP so I am guessing that windows can't find the old version of windows and therefore is thinking this is a new install.

I have the old XP home edition disk with the xp key but I am not asked about that.

How do I get MSN to accept the fact that this is an upgrade and not a new install?

  • When installing an Upgrade version of Windows Vista, you must first install the qualifying Windows XP operating system.  Otherwise, you would need a Full version license for Windows Vista.
