Windows 7 Home Premium activation issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Forum,

First off, apologies for raising this question in this forum, I suspect you guy and gals are likely bored of answering this question.. but thank you in advanced, :)

In essence in May this year my 32bit laptop running a upgrade purchased copy of Windows 7 Home Premium failed, so as a stop gap I moved the hard disk to an old P4 desktop machine (32bit) rebuilding the OS and upgrading it with my upgrade package. Now this machine failed last week so I have built myself a new 64bit AMD system.

I installed XP and then upgraded it with my upgrade copy on my new AMD system, but using the 64bit DVD this time as the hardware warrants it. Sadly it will not activate - I have gone through the automated telephone system and it seems to activate with a success message but after a few hours on checking it goes back to being an unlicenced copy all be it with a few more days before automatic activation.

Just to clarify - my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium *only* exists on my new AMD machine after the hardware failure of both my laptop and Pentium 4 system.

Please see my diagnostic report from MGAD:-

  • Thanks for replying Noel - bizarrely reapplying the original CD key from the box seems to have cured this problem as the status of my Windows 7 installation appears to be sticking as genuine.

  • You are using a Key Management Services volume license product key.

License Status: Additional grace period (KMS license expired or hardware out of tolerance)

You need to contact the organization which owns this key.  If you are no longer associated with the organization that owns this key, you need to purchase a full license copy of Windows.

Colin – this is a Retail Key, NOT a KMS one. (the error message is generic)

You need to activate by telephone – as would anyone else after changing the system on which a Key is activated.

    telephone activation.
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.

  • Many thanks for your time everyone :)

Certainly I have tried the telephone process but forcing it to allow me to speak to an operator might sort me out with some human interaction..

Incidentally, retyping my licence key seems to have worked for the time being, so fingers crossed this sticks and stay licenced.

Just to confirm my product is not a enterprise licence product, I brought it as a standalone from Curry's when Windows 7 came out :)

Will keep you all posted - but many many thanks

Please post a new MGADiag report – it’ll show whether the new Key has ‘taken’ properly or not, and allow us to close this thread out.
