  • Question

  • I' ve been using Vista for almost a year now and didnt come across any problems until a few days back when the system failed to load the VISTA WELCOME SCREEN . 2 days back i got the above mentioned error saying that i would no longer be receiving notifications , including those of license or activation.

Ive tried deleting all software except the ones which were on the pc when i bought it , but this measure doesnt seem to have brought about any changes..

My system was genuine all this time , but now i dont know whats happened to the system. Another problem ive noticed is that some programs just get erased from the system without me doing anything.

I also tried checking out the link the error directed me to , but what it showed was that my copy of windows was not genuine.

PLEASE ADVICE AS TO WHAT I SHOULD DO ABOUT THIS.EXPECTING AN ANSWER.

  • Hi Jerry,

This appears to be a classic case of a Program that is incompatible with Vista.  If a program is incompatible with Vista, it has to be running to cause a Tamper event. If you generate a Diagnostic Report when the program is not running, the report would show Vista as Genuine

Your Diagnostic Report currently shows Vista as Genuine, but I do see a Tamper Event (TTS Error: M:20090401171809249-) that occured on April 1st 2009, at 1:17 am. This suggests to me that when you generated the Diagnostic Report, the incompatible program was not running, but the program had been running at on 04/01 1:17 am (your time).

You mentioned that you uninstalled all the programs (except the ones that came with the computer).  Hopefully, you uninstalled the offending program and once you reboot, you shouldn't see the issue again (unless you reinstall and run the bad program again).  But, if the error does continue to occur, when it does, look to see what programs are running and remove them untill you no longer receive the error.

One other possibility is that this is being caused by some form of Malware. Malware will sometime do the same sort of Tamper, on purpose, that an incompatible program does by accident.  So if you have ruled out all the legitimate programs, as the cause, you may need to start looking for a Malware causes. We strongly recommend running an (up to date) Anti-Virus program, of your choice, as well as the Microsoft Safety Scan for Vista at http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm (note: that fact that some of your programs appear to be disappearing also suggests a malware infection)

    Hope that helps,
    Darin MS

  • thanks a lot darin .. but just one more thing... how do i check what programs are running when the error appears ..TASK MANAGER ?

Would BitDefender 2008 be good for scanning the pc ?

finally , you said the program was running on 04/01 at 1:17 am ...how can i check what programs were running at that point of time?

    Thursday, April 2, 2009 6:59 PM
  • Hi Jerry,

Yes, Task Manager should show you what (non-malware) programs are running.  Look at both the Applications and Processes tabs.  (the Description column, in the Processes tab, should tell you the program the proces belongs to)

Offically, I can't comment (good or bad) on non-Microsoft programs, but the free edition of AVG is well know (i.e. not some fly by night company), very popular and it's free. That should not be considered a recommendation, though. What ever Anti-Virus you use, make sure to seach the internet for that program to be sure it's a good one.  I usually do a seach like '<program name> Review' and then look for actual user comments. If there are more negative then positive, look for another scanner.  You should also try the Safety scan I mentioned above...it can take a very long time, but does tend to catch things others miss.

There may be a monitor or log that records what programs were running at what time, but unfortunatly, I have no knowledge of one...sorry.

    Hope that helps,
    Darin MS
