Query regarding Microsoft Certification upgrade path RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a query regarding the Microsoft Windows Server upgrade path.

I already have MCSE Server 2003 credentials. Now i intend to upgrade my certification to Server 2012 but i understand that there is an upgrade path first to Server 2008 and then to 2012. Can someone please let me know what is the upgrade path to 2012 certification. i.e first upgrade to 2008 and then 2012. I am also reading that most of the upgrade exams to 2008 are now being retired. What about 70-649, is it still valid? Preferably, shortest path please.

    Many thanks.

    Regards,

    Ochen

  • Hi Ochen,

You will find a list of all retired exams here: https://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/retired-certification-exams.aspx

Jeff also posted a sticky in this forum where you can find the information (see top of the forums list) It's the first one. Now as I can see the 2003 exams have been retired so i think the upgrade path to 2008 is not an option anymore. In that case you would have to go for the 2012 directly meaning that you have to take all the exams in order to get MCSE.

Strange thing is that 70-649 is still available on the exam list when you try to schedule this. So this would seem an option. The 70-648 was retired on july 31 2013? If it is still valid to take i'd say go for it immediately because that will vanish soon :-)

Shortest path: so the upgrade will take you some exams because you also have to take the upgrade path from 2008 to 2012. Taking the exams for 2012 would likely be as fast. My advice? Go for the clean version and take the exams for 2012 that will get you up to date with the latest technology. From that point on keep your eyes on upcoming upgrade paths to the next versions.
