Hardware for backing up WHS? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • My WHS box is tucked away in the loft. Currently I use USB drives attached to my workstation for backup. I'd like to put a backup drive on my WHS box. With the connector for the backup drive in my office. But the distance limit for USB and firewire is 5 metres. Any suggestions on a solution?

  • There are no consumer solutions that will let you do what you want, Quentin. If you had a home fiber backbone, there might be some options...

But to be honest, you're already doing what I would recommend, with the exception that I would use eSATA drives instead of USB. You'll get better performance.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

We're stretching beyond the expectations of a home there. Even if I am an IT pro (currently unemployed, alas).

Ah well. Backup via workstation isn't really a problem.
