  • Microsoft .NET Framework is a software component that can be added to the Microsoft Windows operating system. It provides a large body of pre-coded solutions to common program requirements, and manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework. The .NET Framework is a key Microsoft offering, and is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform.

The pre-coded solutions form the framework's class library and cover a large range of programming needs in areas including: user interface, data access, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms, and network communications. The functions of the class library are used by programmers who combine them with their own code to produce applications.

  • if u are already familiar with java, then u can think of the .net framework as the java run time environment... if u r not familiar with java then thats just fine.....

.net framework is a runtime environment. runtime environment provides a virtual machine to run your program. when u compile your program it is converted to one intermediate code. and that intermediate code is then executed by the runtime environment.

    the advantages are obvious:

it provides us the flexibility to write programs in any of the .net languages without considering about a specific cpu. the runtime environment will take care of creating the instructions for that particular cpu.

  • .net framework is just like a java run time environment. it creats a virtual environment for the .net prg to run on it without have to know any thing abt hardwares in that system
